Accountant - Open Rank Professional (Entry, Intermediate, or Senior)

Job Summary:


The Finance Office is responsible for all University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus accounting and financial functions which include but are not limited to:

  • the maintenance of financial systems,
  • reporting of financial information,
  • capital construction accounting,
  • reconciliations between the general ledger and related subsystems,
  • accounting feed/interface with the State’s accounting system,
  • providing accounting support to various campus departments,
  • internal reviews,
  • interpretation/compliance of state, federal, and university fiscal rules.

You will be performing accounting duties and providing accounting service to campus departments and schools. You’ll be involved with reconciling campus pool accounts for fringe benefits, reviewing journal entries, fielding help desk questions, analyzing general ledger transactions, reviewing and processing chartfield requests, investigating and clearing campus payroll suspense accounts, preparing monthly deficit memos and following up with responsible fiscal managers, preparing financial statements and assisting with month-end and year-end closing tasks. Key Responsibilities (All Levels):

Reconciliation and Analysis (70%)

  • Reconcile campus pool accounts for fringe benefits, analyze benefit transactions, investigate discrepancies, and correct errors.
  • Review chartfield requests from departments and set up chartfield in finance system in compliance with fund accounting and university guideline.
  • Review journal entries based on generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and university guideline.

Financial Reporting (15%)

  • Investigate and make correction for abnormal balances in financial statements.
  • Interpret, analyze, evaluate, and investigate financial data or transactions.
  • Generate and prepare financial reports as assigned.

Month-end Close and Customer Support (15%)

  • Perform accounting tasks as assigned for university general ledger’s month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closes.
  • Field questions from departments and provide training regarding accounting, financial reporting, and university systems (such as Peoplesoft and HCM).

This position has the ability to work in a hybrid model.

Qualifications:


Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Professional Level:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, business, finance, accounting, or a directly related field from an accredited institution with 24 semester hours in accounting or auditing is required.

Intermediate Professional Level:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, business, finance, accounting, or a directly related field from an accredited institution with 24 semester hours in accounting or auditing is required.
  • At least one (1) year of professional accounting experience.

Senior Professional Level:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, business, finance, accounting, or a directly related field from an accredited institution with 24 semester hours in accounting or auditing is required.
  • At least two (2) years of professional accounting experience.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis. Graduate courses and/or a graduate degree in accounting may be substituted for work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience at a Higher Education Institution or State of Colorado Agency with knowledge of university administrative and fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Experience with University of Colorado systems, reporting, finance, and PeopleSoft System financial module.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and governmental accounting standard pronouncements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn and experiment with new software and systems.
  • Ability to follow standard written procedures in order to perform the duties.
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills in financial reconciliations.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

Anticipated Salary Range:


The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as:

  • Entry Level: $40,731 – $51,810
  • Intermediate Level: $44,325 – $56,382
  • Senior Level: $47,919 – $60,953

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation depending on the level.
