    GRANT ACCOUNTANT - WEST FARGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS


    POSITION: Grant Accountant - Leidal Education Center - West Fargo Public Schools

    TERM: Year-round position, Monday - Friday, Exempt

    SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of Accounting, the Grant Accountant will manage the financial aspects of grants and contracts awarded to the school district and ensure compliance with all regulations and guidelines, while providing support to grant-funded programs, projects, and departments.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned)

    Accounting Department:

    • Prepare financial reports and budget projections for grant-funded programs and projects
    • Form positive working relationships with awarding agencies, grant managers, and District directors to ensure effective and efficient use of grant dollars
    • Research and communicate compliance requirements for new and existing grants
    • Communicate internal control policies and compliance requirements with stakeholders
    • Review payables batches entered to grant codes for allowability and budget availability
    • Review new hire, change, and transfer entries for account code accuracy and alignment
    • Maintain accurate and systematic financial records and prepare necessary journal entries to ensure the accurate coding of grant transactions
    • Identify new and emerging grant opportunities for which the District is eligible
    • Create chart of account codes for newly awarded grants
    • Responsible for maintaining accurate, organized, and complete grant files with awards notifications, contracts, budget amendments, time and effort logs, and other supporting documentation
    • Supports tracking all federal grant inventories by grant managers and building leadership
    • Ensures capital assets purchased through federal grants are complete and appropriately recorded on the year-end government-wide financial statements
    • Meet all fiscal reporting and compliance deadlines as outlined in grant contracts
    • Review grant accounts receivable listing for timely payment of receivables from local, state, and federal agencies and contact the agency on long-outstanding reimbursements
    • Assist in the compilation of data and reconciliation of grants for the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards for the annual single audit
    • Provide external auditors with timely and accurate grant financial information during the annual single audit
    • Conduct periodic internal audits of grant programs to ensure activity is reported accurately, complies with regulations, internal policies, and GAAP
    • Support grant managers and buildings during monitoring visits from awarding agencies
    • Review employee payroll coding on grants against grant budgets and personnel listings on a monthly basis
    • Prepare monthly reimbursement requests to grant awarding agencies, ensuring proper approval from departments and accuracy of transactions
    • Assist in collection and review of time and effort logs from staff semi-annually


    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
    • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principals (GAAP)
    • Knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel for data management, aggregation and reporting
    • An openness to new and emerging technologies and data integration
    • Ability to work with others, resolve controversy and conflict through respectful negotiation
    • Ability to read, analyze and interpret financial reports and legal documents, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
    • Strong communication skills in all formats and ability to share concepts in an easy to understand way with those that may not work with them typically
    • Ability to connect and share ideas, select an appropriate format to express thoughts and ideas with integrity and appropriate digital citizenship
    • Ability to apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills using attention to detail and accuracy
    • Ability to demonstrate physical, social, mental, and emotional soundness in order to execute the duties of the position, persisting on a path toward physical and mental wellness despite impediments and challenges
    • Ability to perform duties in an organized, punctual manner, keeping appropriate confidentiality regulations in place along with an awareness of all district requirements and school board policies
    • Ability to demonstrate responsibility and organization to design a work plan
    • Grant accounting, single audit, auditing, or general grant compliance experience preferred
    • Experience in accounting systems, general database applications, payroll and tax reporting applications preferred

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms.

    • The employee is frequently asked to perform duties requiring repetitive motions and must maintain good workplace ergonomic practices.


    SALARY: 2022-2023 Classified Salary Schedule - C430 or C433, dependent on CPA certification, this position has a starting salary range of $61,000 - $74,000 (steps 1-5 starting).
    West Fargo Public Schools offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package, which includes health, dental, and vision insurance. The salary listed for this position is the base cash salary and excludes retirement contributions. For eligible classified positions, the district contributes 8.26% of the employee’s annual salary to the North Dakota Public Employees Retirement System (NDPERS).
