Lutheran Social Services is currently seeking a Staff Accountant to join our Financial Services Team. Under the direction of the Director of Accounting, the Accountant provides excellent customer service to all those needing financial data to make decisions within the Agency. The Accountant is a member of the LSS Financial Services Team and provides fiscal management services for program directors, supervisors, managers and team leaders. The Accountant is responsible for assisting in the recording of accurate and timely financial information and other projects and duties as assigned. The position works in concert with Financial Services Team members.

This position will be based out of the corporate headquarters, but will primarily work remote. Remote employees must reside in WI.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Work with other accounting members in a team environment, working towards common strategic goals.
  • Under direct supervision, apply principles of accounting to record financial information and prepare financial reports.
  • Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the accounting software, financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Learn and practice the high ethical standards in financial reporting.
  • Prepare and document routine general ledger entries.
  • Complete assigned account reconciliations independently resolving discrepancies.
  • Prepare monthly invoices and supporting documentation for the funders of various programs.
  • Compile and prepare financial data and reports using various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages.
  • Recognize and communicate improper/unusual transactions to Director of Accounting.
  • Assist in the preparation for the annual audit.
  • Create and maintain audit trail of all activities involving the general ledger.
  • Establish and maintain effective public and working relationships, including partnering with programs and other internal customers by providing financial support.
  • Stay abreast of and assist in implementation of employee training for changing business requirements including documentation of processes and procedures.
  • Assist team members with project work as needed.
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as calculations, data preparation and verification, frequency distribution, trends, and variance analysis.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Other duties as required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. An internship of up to two years or other related experience preferred. Employee must possess some technical skills in the areas of financial data record keeping, financial reporting, and the use of business software tools. A high level of customer satisfaction and co-worker respect must be demonstrated. Employee should be flexible and able to manage multiple tasks at a time. Attention to detail is a must.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation to perform the essential duties of the role; a motor vehicle check (MVR) with a satisfactory driving record per the LSS Driver Safety Procedure is required, and ability to meet LSS auto insurance requirements.
  • CPA or eligibility for CPA licensure preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Employee must be able to read and understand English and US Dollar currency. Employee must be able to read, analyze, and interpret common technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Employee must be able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Employee must have the ability to effectively present information to customers, vendors and other employees of the organization. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.

COMPUTER SKILLS/TECHNOLOGY:
Working knowledge of computers to allow employee to access computer systems and applications to complete timecards, read and respond to email, and complete required on-line training.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge and proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing.

TRAVEL: Regular travel is not required, however, some daily/overnight travel may be required on an infrequent basis.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
