PAY RATE: $15.00/hr

The Academy Coach will create training methods to develop and guide each participant's skills, knowledge of the sport, and goal setting. Participants of all ages on the team should gain an understanding of good sportsmanship, confidence, and the core values of the YMCA.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Serve as a role model to members and Y staff and at all times lives the mission, vision and values of the YMCA movement.
  • Develop, implement, schedule and run academy style team practices focusing on skill development.
  • Demonstrate and emphasize skills development including safety, fair play, and sportsmanship while setting realistic and age-appropriate expectations for team members. Able to build rapport with team participants.
  • Ensure all team participants receive equal playing time.
  • Ensuring the safety of the team during practice sessions and games by following proper precautions and regulations.
  • Communicate with program participants and parents about information regarding the academy activities, goals, practices, etc. Able to respond to questions and concerns for the same.
  • Give participant knowledge to understand and master skills allowing for improvement in skills development. Provide corrective feedback that will enhance participant's techniques.
  • Communicate effectively with the Program Director about daily practice procedures, emergencies, and information regarding participants and team's well being.
  • Ability to make sound judgments in all situations and transfer learning from one situation to another.
  • Ensure necessary equipment is set out and put away for practices and in good working order.
  • Able to officiate/referee during games.
  • Assist the Program Director with the promotion of team participation to advance team and academy program growth.
  • Maintain certifications listed under Certificates and Other Requirements.
  • Adherence to all policies and procedures of the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley.
  • Understand and follow all safety rules and regulations including knowledge of emergency procedures and location of emergency equipment.
  • Regular and timely adherence to respective schedule/meetings.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Program Director.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prefer 18 years of age or older.
  • Prior experience in coaching or the specified sport at a high/elite level.
  • Must have an understanding of how children learn, while having the ability to communicate clearly and directly with them.
  • Possess strong organizational, time management, and communication skills

CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to pass background check

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Able to routinely perform the following physical activities as dictated by the sport; run, climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, stand, walk and perform moderate physical activity for extended periods of time, and be able to run to keep up with the pace of the game/play. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and use hands to finger, handle, grasp or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear regularly. Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, use of both eyes, depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus. The employee is regularly required to use oral communication skills; observe and interpret people and situations; possess mental alertness; analyze and solve problems; perform work on multiple, concurrent tasks with constant interruptions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to small children and program equipment. The noise level in the work environment can vary from quiet to moderate depending upon the number of participants and activities occurring in the facility. This position works in a variety of environments, which can include, but are not limited to, pools, sports complexes, schools, gymnasiums and outdoor playing fields.
