BASIC FUNCTION:
The Academic Technology Specialist is an integral part of the Information Technology Services/Academic Technology Services team. In this highly visible and client-facing role, the incumbent supports faculty, students and staff in providing a range of academic technology services throughout smart classrooms, computer labs, and other academic settings and technology enabled spaces across campus, and is committed to ensuring that the highest level of service and support is provided at all times.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
In accordance with IT policies, procedures and guidelines, the incumbent works collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Provide academic technology services and support for faculty in adopting, developing and incorporating technology in the classroom and other areas of pedagogy; demonstrate to faculty the application and use of new and emerging technologies in teaching environments.
  • Provide service and support for users of learning management systems and other instructional and educational technologies; assist with faculty and student outreach programs, tutorials and workshops that support the adoption and use of academic technologies.
  • Provide technical services and support for pedagogical and educational lectures, workshops and events throughout the campus, including: filming, recording and postproduction of lectures, tutorials and other educational and academic events; web-conferences, online meetings, presentations and other collaborative events.
  • Assist with the administration and management of lab and classroom technologies, including deployment and imaging of computers, software updates and patches, installation and support of academic software; administration and management of student printing resources.
  • Develop instructional and training materials and deliver individual and group training sessions and workshops for faculty, staff, students and other campus constituents as required.
  • Research hardware and software, and develop procedures and instructional manuals for multimedia digitizing projects and services; train student workers keeping their technical and procedural skills current; oversee student workers in the performance of their duties including service, support, and production of digital and other media; assist with the administration and development of the digitization job tracking system; monitor job tracking system ensuring that faculty digitization projects are being completed on time and to the required standard.
  • Receive, acknowledge and respond to support requests via the Service Desk; respond to lab and classroom assistance requests and emergency calls.
  • Develop, maintain and publish technical documents, tutorials, and training materials.
  • Other duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
  • Technically oriented with expertise across a broad range of technologies used in the classroom and other educational, instructional and academic environments and settings, including: audio-visual, multi-media and control systems; integration and connectivity of computers, mobile and BYOD devices with other endpoint technologies and audio-visual equipment; LMS, academic software and classroom management systems; Windows, Apple and mobile technology platforms and operating systems; Office productivity software, social media, and other communication and collaboration apps and tools.
  • Experience with higher education student computing environments including practical experience with computer lab and classroom imaging and deployment solutions management and administration; network connectivity; classroom and lab management systems; academic software installations and configurations; high volume print management and audit control environments.
  • Solid troubleshooting and analytical skills; ability to identify and resolve first tier hardware, software, applications and connectivity issues in technology classrooms, computer labs, technology enabled spaces and other academic setting throughout the campus.
  • Excellent verbal, written, listening, interpersonal and customer service skills; superior telephone etiquette, ability to communicate technical concepts to individuals of all competency levels with tact, patience and courtesy; strong desire to help others; deep understanding of the importance of customer service; able to maintain high levels of client satisfaction.
  • Work in a collegial manner with faculty, staff, and students; work with colleagues in a team environment demonstrating a positive attitude toward teamwork, knowledge and expertise sharing; work independently on individually assigned tasks, effectively utilizing reference materials and research resources to complete assignments and resolve issues on time; work collaboratively with colleagues on team tasks to analyze and resolve issues quickly and efficiently; must remain calm under pressure in a fast paced, challenging and energetic environment.
  • Remain current with new technologies and upgrade skillsets, abilities and knowledge in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Minimum typing speed of 45 words per minute.
  • Must be punctual and reliable.
  • Current valid driver license is required.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Technology or related field or the equivalent of experience.
CERTIFICATION: Microsoft, Apple, CTS, Certifications.
: A minimum of 2 years Instructional Technology, Academic Technology, or Technical Support experience in higher education which includes the following:
  • Experience with various applications of educational technology, including learning management systems; multi-media, new media and digital technologies; filming, recording and postproduction of lectures, tutorials and other educational and academic events; academic software, cloud-based educational and pedagogical applications; academic software
  • Strong familiarity with post-secondary pedagogy and experience working with faculty on technology related pedagogical projects; experience with Sakai and/or other LMS systems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds from ground to waist level; climb and work from a ladder and to be able to get down onto the floor and work underneath furniture (desks, tables, podiums etc.).
HOURS: The regular hours for this position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hours may vary due to needs of the College or department.
CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS: This is a full-time, 12 month, nonexempt level, benefits-eligible position.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Student Workers (Instructional Technology Assistants)
REPORTS TO: Assistant Vice President for ITS
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a full consumer background check. Certain positions will require the successful completion of a post-offer physical agility test.
