Master’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) and at least three years related experience in education or non-profit settings supporting students. Highly developed interpersonal, writing, analytical, communication and presentation skills/abilities. Strong attention to detail. Ability to develop and maintain effective professional relationships. Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse groups. Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize and complete multiple tasks with competing deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in advising, counseling and/or collegiate academic success initiatives. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) background and/or experience working with diverse students in STEM disciplines.

The Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program seeks an experienced higher education professional. Academic Advisor/ Summer Bridge Coordinator is an essential role that will be charged with overall organization, planning and execution of the Simons STEM scholars summer bridge program, and will serve as the academic advisor for the first and second year Simons STEM Scholars during the academic year. This dynamic position engages a cross section of units across Stony Brook University (Financial Aid, Academic Departments, Enrollment, admissions, curriculum and undergraduate education, Housing, Dining Services etc.). In addition, the selected applicant must have strong academic advisement, event planning and project management skills. Experience with, knowledge of, and understanding of higher education institutions and operations is preferred as is having an extensive understanding of STEM education. The successful incumbent will have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.

Duties:

  • Coordinate, develop, deliver, and oversee academic, leadership, life skills, and social programming to support the growth and development of incoming scholars for six week Summer Bridge Program. Assess and evaluate effectiveness of programmatic offerings. Recruit, select, train, and oversee Summer Bridge residential counselors.
  • Mentor and coach first and second year scholars through academic advisement. Monitor individual academic progress. Provide one-on-one and group academic/career advising, mentoring, and personal counseling for first and second year Simons Scholars.
  • Coaching students through short-term (summer) and sustained research experiences.
  • Co-facilitate a monthly seminar series, workshops and trainings that support students' personal development, academic success and admission to graduate and professional programs.
  • Teach first year seminar course.
  • Work collaboratively with a broad spectrum of internal and external partners to support student retention and success.
  • Support unit efforts related to research and evaluation, selection weekend coordination, outreach/recruitment and program development.
  • Work closely with the Stony Brook University Advising Community to learn and share campus-wide advising updates, practices and trends.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
