Description

The DOE Scholars Program is offering opportunities to recent graduates to participate in projects and activities at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Program Topics

ORNL boasts state-of-the-art capabilities across a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines, including materials science and engineering, computer and computational science, neutron scattering, neutron science and technology, biological and environmental research, national securities, nuclear physics and engineering, fusion and fission science and technology, and energy efficiency and renewable energy (building technologies, advanced manufacturing, transportation technologies).

Oak Ridge is also the place to be for scientists and engineers who want to be leaders in their disciplines while addressing challenging problems in a multidisciplinary environment. ORNL researchers work in laboratories with world-class, often unique, facilities including the Spallation Neutron Source, High Flux Isotope Reactor, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, National Transportation Research Center, Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, Buildings Technologies Research and Innovation Center, Center for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors, and many more. Many research groups are cross-disciplinary, and projects may be supported by multiple Divisions and Directorates.

Scientific discovery is a team effort. The ORNL also) provides opportunities for recent graduates as well as undergraduate and graduate students to engage with ORNL projects, connect with ORNL researchers and professional staff. Technical and business professionals support achievements in science and technology by helping manage and operate research projects and activities. ORNL is a great place to gain experience in information technology, facilities and operations, human resources, marketing, graphic design, data analytics, cyber security, legal counsel, communications, finance, health services, and many other professional fields.

Stipends

The DOE Scholars Program provides stipends starting at $700 per week for undergraduate students and $750/week for graduate students.

Travel

Travel reimbursement of inbound and outbound costs up to $1,000 for participants who relocate more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned internship location.

Length of Appointment

Appointment dates may vary depending on the project assignment.

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications

Qualifications

This opportunity is open to recent graduates who meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen at the time of application.
  • Be 18 years of age or older at the time of application.
  • Have a degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline or a field that supports the ORNL operations mission including but not limited to communications, management, business and law. If pursuing a degree at the time of application, degree requirements must be met before the appointment start date.

Applicants should be prepared for deep immersion into the project and must be comfortable completing tasks independently.

  • Transcripts/Academic Records - Unofficial transcripts or copies of the student academic records printed by the applicant or by academic advisors from internal institutional systems may be submitted. Transcripts/Academic Records must include name of the academic institution, name of the student, and degree received and date. Documents must have all social security numbers, student identification numbers, and/or dates of birth removed (blanked out, blackened out, made illegible, etc.) prior to uploading into the application system. Proof of degree completions will be required before the appointment start date.
  • Recommendation - You are encouraged to request a recommendation from a professional who can speak to your abilities and potential for success as well as your professional capabilities and personal characteristics. Recommenders will be asked to complete a recommendation in Zintellect.
