Saint John's Abbey Physical Plant invites applications for the full-time, benefit eligible position of Maintenance and Repair Technician.

Saint John's Abbey is located on the Saint John's University campus in central Minnesota on 3,000 acres of managed woodland and lakes just off Interstate 94 at exit 156 about 10 miles west of Saint Cloud and 70 miles northwest of Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Minnesota.

The Maintenance Technician assists with repairs on facilities and equipment, working closely with skilled tradespeople in the areas of carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and painting.

Responsibilities:

  • Completes maintenance work orders assigned through the computerized work order program. Accurately records labor and materials expended, and marks work complete within the work order software.
  • Assists with preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on HVAC systems, including changing filters, belts, and bearings.
  • Performs basic service and repair on plumbing fixtures, including opening clogged lines and drains.
  • Identify and assist with carpentry and misc. repair work. Examples may include, but are not limited to, hanging bulletin boards/whiteboards/pictures/shelves/etc., repairing window screens, changing locks, signage installation, grouting, painting, and cleaning roof drains.
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools including saws, drills, sanders, and various hand tools.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Actively participates in and promotes the occupational safety program and environmental practices of the department.
  • This position is required to carry a cell phone and be available for call back for campus emergencies, including evenings and weekends.
  • Occasional weekend shifts and/or overtime are required as deemed necessary by supervisor or department director.
  • Performs other duties as required by the director or supervisor.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Valid US Driver's license.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools, meters, and equipment in performing duties.
  • Knowledge of general carpentry and repair.
  • Mechanical aptitude and basic electrical and plumbing knowledge.
  • Effective problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while using your own technical judgment.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow safety procedures.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn new technologies.

Physical Abilities:

  • Possess normal sight, hearing, and physical dexterity, with the ability to lift 40 lbs. with or without assistance.
  • Must be able to work off ladders, in tunnels, and in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment as required by the duties being performed.
  • Must be able to work outside during extreme weather conditions (e.g. rain, snow, freezing temperatures, heat, and humidity).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Technical degree or occupational certificate.
  • Experience working in residential or commercial construction.
  • Experience working in building maintenance.
