In 2020, 6% of the caregivers in the US were under the age of 18. Over 40% of rural caregivers have no choice in taking on care, and youth often have to help. The effects on youth are mental and physical health issues, drop in school performance, and delays in social development. The VISTA Member with the Arizona Caregiver Coalition (ACC) will build capacity by combining community measures, developing caregiving youth and community advocacy approaches to strengthen partnerships, and create a resource network for caregiving youth-based support services in rural areas and among minority populations in Arizona. During the year as a VISTA with the Arizona Caregiver Coalition, a VISTA can expect to build relationships with local schools, develop new programs, and partner with internal stakeholders.The Alliance VISTA team offers monthly professional development, a state-wide network of support, and beauty that can only be found in rural Arizona. Relocation to Arizona is required.

Tasks include:

Compile a summary of data on caregiving youth in Arizona

Develop educational materials and schedule presentations with community and government organizations

Develop specific support activities and services for caregiving youth

Ensure there is a sustainable transfer of knowledge, products, and relationships to the appropriate member/volunteer/staff who will be picking up elements of your project after you finish your service year.

This is an AmeriCorps National Service position. This service opportunity is one year, full-time, and offers a stipend. The service opportunity includes: Living Allowance, Relocation Allowance, End of Service Award, Healthcare Benefit, Non-Competitive Eligibility, and Professional Development training. The position is located in Phoenix, Arizona with the Arizona Caregiver's Coalition.
