Under the direct supervision of the Prevention Supervisor, the Youth and Family Support Specialist will serve to support and carry out programming and initiatives that strengthen youth and families informed by the Strategic Prevention Framework and addressing risk and protective factors. Approximately 50% of this role will focus on family support and well-being by working with adults on wellness education and brief intervention programming with the goal of enhancing parents’ role as the primary influence on their child’s wellness and development. The Youth and Family Support Specialist will also be responsible to plan, prepare, and lead Tioga Youth Clubhouse activities for involved youth. Approximately 50% of this position will be spent planning and implementing pro social youth activities and prevention education within the Youth Clubhouse afterschool program, community settings, and school/classroom based settings.

Duties include: working with families in identifying and achieving goals; promoting positive parent-child relationships and interactions, providing child development education, create awareness campaigns promoting healthy childhood development, resilience and ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) education, work with school administration, staff, youth, and community to identify needs, develop a plan for programs and strategies, engage youth in meaningful learning opportunities, promote positive youth development and leadership, teach evidence based curriculum in classroom and community settings.The remainder of the time will be spent planning, implementing, and evaluating other prevention strategies with schools, families, and communities of Tioga County. This position requires flexibility for evening and some weekend hours. Salary: $20-21/hr generous paid time off and full medical/dental benefit options available

Hours: Vary- Flexibility is a must. Afterschool program operates during afterschool hours 3 days/week until 6/6:30 pm. The other 2 days are dependent upon needs of families and schools, typically (8 am-4:30 pm)

Qualifications:

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s Degree in social science, human services, counseling or related field. At least one year experience working within a structured youth program preferred.

REQUIRED: a valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation as well as pass an initial driving background check

· Experience with and ability to show examples of past successes developing and facilitating presentations and programs with diverse groups including children, teens, and adults

· Clear knowledge and practical use of the public health approach to reducing alcohol, tobacco, and other drug related problems

· Belief and commitment to reduce stigma, and diverse, inclusive, and equitable practices.

· Strong and confident group facilitation, leadership development, and public speaking skills

· Demonstration of past experiences engaging youth and adults in conversations around health/wellness based on the audience needs and style

· Ability to build relationships with youth of various ages and their parents/guardians

· Must have strong technology skills, organization skills, record keeping, and time management skills.

· Excellent oral and written communication skills and familiarity with computer software such as Microsoft Office are a must.

· Passionate about improving the health and well being of others, particularly in rural communities.

· Ability to produce media advocacy and health communication messages, flyers, power points, etc.

· Willing to participate in continuous training and professional learning development

· Outgoing, creative, open-minded, flexible, adapts to change, and fun.

Responsibilities/Job Functions:

· Initiate, build, and successfully implement positive pro social activites for Tioga County youth

· Participate in designated staff meetings, trainings, and department planning sessions

· Develop group lesson plans, and actively engage youth ages 12-18 in social-emotional and substance misuse prevention/recovery workshops, activities, events and projects.

· Develop community connections with other human service providers to implement program activities for youth and adults.

· Serve as positive adult role model for participating youth; engage in problem solving with youth, encourage healthy choices, and teach decision-making skills.

· Partner with families to develop an individual plan that is based on information collected through the assessment and family interviews to address medical, social, educational, and other services needed to further family goals, plans, and success strategies.

· Coordinate referrals to services and related agencies to meet identified needs.

· Assist with identifying and establishing professional supports in the community.

· Track and document time and services with accuracy, including tracking case statistics (e.g. direct contacts, service coordination, family training, special instruction, transportation, etc.)

· Complete all consumer-related and program-related paperwork according to established timelines.

· Establish regular contact with families through individual or group sessions.

· Encourage, model, and coach appropriate early childhood practices, parenting skills, and behavior management/modification techniques

· Work collaboratively with referral source to increase family engagement and support program completion.

· Maintain accurate data and tracking records on all assigned youth and families (i.e. incident reports, registration forms, evaluation instruments, etc.)

· Participate in alcohol, tobacco or other drug awareness campaigns such as Red Ribbon Week, Resilience Week, National Prevention Week,

· Participate in health fairs, business expos, parades and other community events

· Adapt existing trainings and content to meet the needs of an audience

· Create/compile presentation materials applicable to adults and youth populations (i.e. fact sheets, brochures, etc.)

· Develop and carry out plans to measure program goals and objective; collect statistics,relevant data, and track progress.

· Provides education and support to the community and schools for promoting healthy lifestyles and healthy choices

· Network with other agencies within the region (prevention, intervention, treatment, mental health, etc.) in order to provide comprehensive services, identify needs, and make referrals as necessary.

Physical Elements

· Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational skills of stooping, kneeling, walking, lifting, grasping, pulling, standing and talking

· Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently,

· Must possess the visual acuity to perform extensive reading, monitor children’s activities, and complete records

· Must be able to participate actively with youth

· Employees may be required to travel short distances

Pay: $20.00 - $21.00 per hour
