Otter Valley is seeking an organized, driven, and independent Community-based Learning Educator to begin in the 2023-2024 school year. This position will teach courses in career exploration and readiness, spearhead middle school personalized learning plan (PLP) development, and placement of students in work-based learning placements. The successful candidate will have high levels of organization, effective communication skills, and the ability to create meaningful partnerships with employers in the community to support Otter Valley students. We also hope that the candidate will continue to refine and enhance the program in line with emergent best practices in the field.Job ResponsibilitiesAll Otter Valley teachers are expected to: implement standards-aligned units of study and engaging lessonsuse content-specific pedagogical techniques to engage learnersuse assessment to inform instruction throughout the learning processcreate positive classroom cultures focused on relationships, inclusive practices, and reciprocal trustscollaborate effectively with colleagues to improve teaching methods and ensure supports are in place for all studentsRequirements specific to this position include: Teach two half-credit courses per semester, one focused on sustainability and careers and the other focused on general work readiness skillsCoordinate work-based learning and volunteer placements for students that have completed the entrance course.

These placements could include job shadowing, job rotations, or an extended internship, and can serve up to twelve students per semester. Priority for placement support will be given to students working on their first work-based learning experience.Work with case managers in order to determine students for whom traditional work-based learning placements may require additional supports and/or non-traditional placements; develop additional layers of support for such students through teamingMeet in a structured setting with students on their first placement in work-based learning once per month through the Flex programVisit at least once per semester and more regularly as needed to assess student progress and address emergent needs impacting the student and/or employerDevelop and/or revise an evaluation tool for students and employers to use to assess progress; consult with employers and volunteer coordinators on assessment of student progress.Work with the Rowland Fellow and Rowland Steering Committee to develop a revised template for the middle school personalized learning plan; pilot the approach with an advisory in Grade 7 and Grade 8. Note that, in future years, this role will include facilitation of the PLP development process in all middle school advisories.Partner with teachers to build career connections within the classroom and curriculum, including through special projects, guest speakers, and off-site field tripsContinue to develop partnerships with local employers and public service organizations to promote future work-based learning placementsBe an ambassador within the school and broader community for the work-based learning programComplete other duties as assigned by the administration and consistent with responsibilities assigned to all OV teachers, including advisory, lunch duty, grading, etc.Education, Training and Experience RequirementsMust be eligible or possess Vermont State Professional License with appropriate endorsement as a Work-based Learning CoordinatorA background in community-based education is helpful, as is demonstrated experience in creating partnerships that support students.About Otter Valley Union Middle and High SchoolOtter Valley Union Middle and High School, located in Brandon, Vermont, is the middle and high school for Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union. We are located near the larger communities of Rutland and Middlebury, with easy access to year-round recreation opportunities in the Green Mountains, nearby lakes, and countless trails.
