The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life.

LDWF supports a strong work ethic in its employees and incorporates the use of good science, accurate information and technology. The Office of Fisheries exists to ensure that aquatic resources are sustainable for present and future generations of Louisiana citizens by providing access and scientific management.

This technical position functions to assess, treat, manage and carry out various research tasks on aquatic plants in a large geographic region in Louisiana. This position is responsible for monitoring the level of aquatic plant infestation on water bodies within their assigned region of the state and participating in the application of EPA approved herbicides. This position also may participate in fisheries sampling, provide general carpentry or equipment operation assistance with building, grounds, and equipment maintenance.


IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Boat operation and maintenance experience
  • Basic mechanical, electrical, and carpentry skills
  • Aquatic plant identification skills or an interest in learning about aquatic plants
  • Comfortable with handling and applying or learning to handle and apply herbicides
  • Good observational and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Good interpersonal skills

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participates in various operational and research activities associated with the control of nuisance aquatic vegetation including preparing and applying various aquatic herbicides, sampling and stocking biological control agents, deploying and maintaining boom
  • May occasionally participate in collection of biological fisheries dependent and independent data for research projects and the formulation of management plans for waterbodies or streams.
  • Keeps records including vehicle logs, boat logs, spray logs, chemical usage, purchasing, and timesheets
  • Communicates with workgroup and the public in person and via phone, text, and email
  • Works with biological control agents used in the control of nuisance vegetation.
  • Responsible for monitoring the level of aquatic plant infestation on water bodies within their assigned region of the state.
  • Operates and maintains high pressure spray pumps, boats, winches, trailers, navigational equipment, motor vehicles, and power tools.


The Wildlife and Fisheries Technician position participates in a Career Progression Group (CPG) and is advertised to be filled as a Wildlife and Fisheries Technician A, B or C.
