General Definition of Work*
Performs work implementing and coordinating the County Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program in cooperation with other health, social service, and education programs in the County, evaluating the health and nutrition risk of women, infants, and children already participating in the WIC program, determining eligibility for recertification according to WIC guidelines, and related work as apparent or assigned.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Public Health Supervisor.

  • Evaluates potentially eligible women, infants and children to determine if they may be certified as participants in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program.
  • Performs valuation of nutritional risk.
  • Assesses the person's height, weight, hematological test, diet and medical history; obtains height, weight and hematological values.
  • Serves as the Nutrition Education Coordinator and provides nutrition education to WIC participants per state mandate and assures documentation.
  • Provides lactation education and support for WIC participants.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to community organizations to support family’s needs.
  • Participates in Public Health Emergency Preparedness activities, trainings and exercises as requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food and Nutrition and minimal experience in customer service or other work with the public and preferably for low-income clientele. The required coursework for the bachelor’s degree must include food and nutrition, including general human nutrition and nutrition for infants, children and women during prenatal, postpartum and breast-feeding stages. Principles of counseling and/or adult education. As well as chemistry or biological sciences.
  • Valid driver's license in the State of Minnesota and proof of insurance.

Special Qualifications

  • Certified Lactation Specialist/Certified Lactation Consultant.
  • Registered Dietician.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge and accuracy in principles and methods of nutrition especially as relates to women, infants, and children.
  • Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Knowledge of personal health concepts.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with WIC participants.
  • Ability to keep abreast of ever-expanding knowledge in the field of nutrition.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with private and public agency personnel and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral or written presentation.
  • Ability to conduct research, organize and report data.
  • Ability to maintain personal health habits conducive to effective communication of public health and nutrition concepts.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and implement nutrition education programs.
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of Nutrition Education and the WIC program.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, community providers, educational personnel, medical and mental health representatives, WIC participants, private and public agency personnel, program recipients, social service agents, and the general public.

Working Conditions
Physical Requirements and Activity
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force.
Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires sitting and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions.
Sensory Requirements
Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
Sensory Utilization
Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices and observing general surroundings and activities.
Environmental Conditions
Work has no exposure to environmental conditions.
Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Supplemental Information

A score of 80 or better is necessary to continue in the process. A top group of qualified applicants will be invited to the interview process.

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a background investigation including a criminal history search. Costs of the background will be paid for by Isanti County.
