The Vehicle Driver I works a designated eight (8) hour shift in the Central Kitchen and/or at a variety of satellite areas under the supervision of a Food Service Manager. Maintains sufficient knowledge of duties and related work to satisfy the requirements of the job and must be able to perform each essential and marginal function satisfactorily. Performs routine food service work. Drives a delivery vehicle to load, unload and transport food, supplies or any item needed for client/departmental use, following a pre-determined schedule. Work involves daily sorting, delivery and pick up of any item that is required for client/departmental use; sanitation and maintenance of trucks, equipment, work areas, dishes, utensils and pots and pans; and assisting in preparing, portioning and serving food as needed. Responsible for accurately completing all daily reports. Handles food in accordance with federal, state and HACCP guidelines. Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

Drives a delivery vehicle to load, unload and transport food, supplies or any item needed for client/departmental use, following a pre-determined schedule, in a safe, sanitary and timely manner, securing and protecting items being delivered.
Safely handles and operates delivery vehicle and equipment, including vehicle power lift gates, carts and dollies.
Ensures safe loading and unloading of cargo, securing down the cargo to assure safe transport of items.
Observes safety procedures and practices.
Maintains delivery vehicle in proper working condition.
Accurately completes preventive maintenance checks and routine vehicle paperwork as per facility policy.
Follows proper food handling in accordance to federal, state and HACCP guidelines.
Follows the sanitation procedures for cleaning the delivery vehicle
Follows the sanitation procedures for cleaning central kitchen areas and satellite areas.
Completes all required training per policy.
Maintains eligibility to operate state vehicles.

Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to assisting in all areas of the food service work, actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.



Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of driving light and/or medium delivery trucks using safe driving practices.
Knowledge of preventive vehicle maintenance procedures.
Knowledge of defensive driving techniques.
Knowledge of appropriate methods for lifting, loading and unloading food, supplies and equipment.
Knowledge of methods of preparing and serving foods in large quantities.
Knowledge of therapeutic and texture modified diets.
Knowledge of adaptive feeding devices.
Knowledge of common institutional food service equipment and tools.
Knowledge of food service sanitation techniques.
Knowledge of proper food handling techniques.
Ability to operate institutional kitchen appliances and equipment in a safe manner.
Ability to lift and move heavy items (50 lbs.) as appropriate safely.
Ability to express oneself effectively and in a professional manner, communicating information clearly and effectively.
Ability to work effectively with food service staff, direct care staff, clients and others.
Ability to compute simple arithmetic.
Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Requires a valid Driver’s License and eligible driving record based on HHSC Fleet Management policy. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure or obtain a valid Texas Driver’s License


Initial Selection Criteria:
Experience in driving a light and/or medium delivery truck preferred.
Experience in receiving, storage and delivering food and /or supplies required.



Additional Information:
The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the minimum of the salary range.

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/ Entities. Males between the ages of 18 – 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to Random drug testing.

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
