General Information

This is responsible administrative and field work in planning, organizing and enforcing the forestry functions of the City of Mobile.

JURISDICTION YEARLY SALARY
CITY OF MOBILE $45,853 - $73,304

EXAMINATION: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS. READ CAREFULLY. No written or oral examination will be required. Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Attainment of a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university in forestry or a closely related field, and preferably one year experience in urban forestry; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
:
Must possess a valid driver’s license from state of residence.

Must obtain Arborist certification by the International Society of Arboriculture within the first year of employment.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK
:
Good knowledge of tree identification and silviculture.

Good knowledge of tree physiology.

Good knowledge of tree planting and transplanting procedures.

Some knowledge of the Mobile Tree Ordinance and Right-of-Way Ordinance or ability to readily acquire such knowledge.

Some knowledge of ordinance enforcement procedures or ability to readily acquire such knowledge.

Ability to interpret planting plans.

Ability to draw landscape plans and specifications.

Ability to plan, layout and supervise the work of others.

Ability to effectively prepare and present reports, both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with realtors, builders, developers, public officials, other employees and the general public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work in a standard office or field environment which may require frequent lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling of objects and materials.

Ability to work within assigned offices, buildings and in the field, or in different locations, for supervision of staff and work performed in various areas of urban forestry.

Ability to travel to different office locations to plan, coordinate, and oversee urban forestry operations.

Ability to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Description

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)

Prepares an inventory of the number and types of trees on city rights-of-way, in parks and cemeteries and on other city property.

Enforces local and state ordinances pertaining to urban forestry.

Coordinates and investigates tree removals with the Mobile Tree Commission.

Assesses the condition of trees and develops programs to provide for their needs.

Develops staff reports and secures permission from the Tree Commission prior to the removal of any trees.

Conducts plan reviews.

Produces and interprets planting plans and landscape drawings.

Prepares cost estimates for tree planting.

Supervises the propagation, planting, transplanting and maintenance of trees.

Schedules and reviews the work of subordinates.

Assists in the coordination of daily work assignments for work crews.

Investigates complaints over tree removal.

Prepares and issues citations for violations.

Represents the Urban Development Department in court.

Testifies and submits evidence in court relating to tree ordinance violations.

Performs related work as required.

Important Information

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for developing landscape plans, inventorying trees on city property, coordinating tree removal with the Tree Commission, planning and directing planting projects and disease and insect control programs, and inspecting and enforcing state and local tree related laws and ordinances. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Deputy Director of Urban Forestry and supervision may be exercised over zoning and planning employees as assigned.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION: Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work. The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board. Appointees must bear the cost of the examination.

A “Practice Test Seminar” is held in the Personnel Department Office, 1809 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama, at 9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices. Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
