Job description
The Electrical and Computer Engineering programs at Utah Valley University have research openings for two Junior/Senior Students in ECE interested to get experience in Machine Learning/Deep learning applications for Early fire detection using drones.
The hired students will be paid up to 7 hours per week.
In this project, two ECE students will:
- Work with the PI on the datasets related to forest fire detection.
- Work on two existing ML-based algorithms and tune the parameters of the codes using the Hyperband approach to see if the results can be improved.
- Work with Dr. Shekaramiz to come up with a new algorithm to tackle the detection problem and increase the detection performance.
- Work with a drone and help of fire marshal in a controlled fire environment. The developed algorithms will also be applied to the drone images. The obtained results will be evaluated by several methods such as the loss function and the confusion matrix. The obtained results will be submitted to a related conference.
- Meet weekly with Dr. Shekaramiz and presentations are required for this project.
- Student enrolled at UVU in Electrical or Computer Engineering & junior or senior level.
- Must have a great interest in deep learning, machine learning, coding, and image processing.
- Good grasp of the fundamentals of Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Knowledge/high desire for machine/deep learning
- Knowledge of image processing
- Good coding skills especially with Python
