Under direct and indirect supervision, a Peer Tutor provides academic support to current Eastern Gateway Community College students, develops a tutoring plan that meets students’ needs, and assesses progress toward achieving the plan. The position reports either in a student success center or from a remote location using live video conferencing services with students. The role is essential to assist in the development of a student’s overall success at the college. We are seeking tutors for our campuses in both Steubenville, OH and Youngstown, OH.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide tutoring to Eastern Gateway Community College students (both in-seat and remote/online students)
• Offer assistance with developing study strategies
• Develop a tutoring plan that fits the student’s individual needs
• Establish a supportive and encouraging learning environment
• Prepare tutoring sessions to foster academic development
• Assess the tutee’s progress throughout tutoring sessions and report to the director
• Participate in tutor training and development sessions
• Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Must obtain a grade of A or B in the course, or successful completion of a higher-level course, for which tutoring services are being provided
• Must demonstrate knowledge and competency in the subject matter and be able to effectively explain the concepts

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Must be punctual and responsible to the needs of the student and the College
• Be able to work effectively and courteously with students, administrators, the public, academic and technical faculty
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and be able to work with diverse groups of people with diplomacy, sensitivity, and confidentiality
• Self-motivated and able to function effectively without day-to-day supervision
• Display a commitment to the philosophical mission of the College

Eastern Gateway Community College is a community college with one main campus in Steubenville, Ohio as well as a campus located in Youngstown.

History

The school was founded in 1966 as Jefferson County Technical Institute, opening its doors for the first time in 1968 to serve the residents of Jefferson County, Ohio . It later changed its name to Jefferson Technical College in 1977. In 1995, the technical college became a community college and the name changed once more to Jefferson Community College. In 2009, the college expanded its service district to include three Ohio counties in addition to the original Jefferson: Columbiana , Mahoning , and Trumbull . This resulted in a further name change and the college became known as Eastern Gateway Community College in October 2009.
