The NEPA Team:
This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring the Iowa Department of Transportation stays in its lane when it comes to federal-aid transportation projects complying with environmental regulations. This four-person team makes up the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Compliance Section of the Location and Environment Bureau (LEB). This team is responsible for a variety of tasks associated with the planning and preparation of environmental documents.

Duties:
  • Preparing technical reports and documents
  • Working with city and county project applicants
  • Coordinating with resource/regulatory agencies
  • Representing the bureau in project management teams
  • Interacting with the public and interested stakeholders on a routine basis
Work Hours: Days, M-F; Teleworking and flex-time available

Location: Ames, Iowa

Travel: This position may require some travel

Selectives

595 Regional Planning
6 months’ experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in developing plans and programs for utilization of land and physical factors of counties (one or more) for residential, commercial, industrial and community uses. Recommendations affect land-use, public utilities, community factors, housing and transportation. This may include rural areas.

OR

450 Natural Resources
6 months’ experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in one or in a combination of more than one of the following:

  • Ecology
  • Environmental planning
  • Soil conservation
  • Biological sciences
  • Waste water treatment
  • Forestry
  • Engineering related to natural resource areas (dams, sanitary engineers, etc.)
  • Outdoor recreation planning
  • Physical sciences
  • River basin planning
  • Geography
  • Wildlife management

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in civil/transportation/traffic engineering, environmental engineering, finance, business administration, supply chain management, data science, geography, economics, mathematics, community development planning, regional planning, urban planning, or transportation planning.
  • A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience, where one year of full-time work experience in civil/transportation/traffic engineering, environmental engineering, finance, business administration, supply chain management, data science, geography, economics, mathematics, community development planning, regional planning, urban planning, or transportation planning equals thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work (as described in number one).
