The Tax & License Accountant is responsible for the accurate and timely filing of all operating taxes and business licenses (including sales and use, property, real estate, franchise and other non-operating taxes) for all Batteries Plus entities. The Tax & License Accountant will prepare and record all monthly and annual accounting entries and maintain all related account reconciliations. This role will manage all tax audits through completion while recommending company policies to continuously improve accuracy while identifying opportunities for tax savings.

Responsibilities:

Operating Tax/Business Registration


  • Prepare and file multi-state sales/use tax reports timely and accurately
  • Maintain knowledge of current jurisdictional regulations and internal policies and procedures to ensure company compliance for sales and use tax
  • Train and support other staff on use tax assessment
  • Manage State sales/use tax audits
  • Review and research state notices, ensuring notice is resolved with individual states
  • Correspond with taxing authorities and maintain annual Secretary of State registrations/renewals
  • Manage State portals and log in information between all parties who need access
  • Supports tax inquiries from around the company including purchasing, facilities, logistics, and other internal and external business partners
  • Address tax department inquiries from internal and external business partners;
  • Maintain tax software system, optimize usage, drive process improvements
  • Maintain monthly schedules for taxable fringe benefits calculations

Property Tax

  • Record monthly accounting for tax while assessing proper accrual for all facilities
  • Manage annual tax assessments, identify opportunities, track to filing and payment
  • Prepare and file annual property tax returns

Internal Tax Systems/External Support

  • Constant improvement of internal sources and methods used to collect necessary data
  • Manage external resources used to file and pay periodic operating tax and seek areas of improvement
  • Develop short and long term opportunities for efficiencies, accuracy and expense savings

Payroll/Employment Tax

  • Build and maintain constructive relationship with payroll to ensure BP is withholding, remitting and paying all applicable Federal/State employment related tax
  • Research and register BP LLC for any new State/Local employment taxes for locations
  • Work with payroll to provide new account/rate information to payroll service

Business Insurance

  • Support, gather and prepare statement of values for the annual renewal for corporate insurance policies
  • File and support Property and Vehicle claim and work with internal and external partners to gather sufficient information to investigate claims and monitor claims until closed
  • Identify property acquisitions and sales and ensure insurance arrangements are up-to-date
  • Maintain Current Vehicle listing to ensure accurate insurance needs and state registrations

Other Related Duties

  • Perform detailed and accurate general ledger account analysis and reconciliations of the operating tax accounts
  • Prepare monthly general journal entries to record responsible tax expense, assess accruals and record necessary adjustments
  • Participate in Balance Sheet budgeting and monthly forecasting process for operating tax accounts
  • Prepare all US Commerce requests and questionnaires
  • Support compliance with governmental reporting including federal, state and local requirements
  • Participate in the external audit including analysis and preparation of assigned schedules and communication and support with auditors
  • Provide support with license, tax and registration needs for business acquisitions

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
  • 4+ years experience in operating tax accounting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Intermediate to advanced experience in MS Excel (i.e., VLOOKUP and other formula functions, filtering and grouping data, etc.)
  • Proficient in Avalara or other tax research tools
  • Previous experience in GP Dynamics
  • Previous accounting in a retail and/or distribution industry
