Tarrytown Dog Care Specialist
SUMMARY
The Tarrytown Dog Care Specialist is a very important role to APA!. The Tarrytown Dog Care Specialist cares for the overall well-being of our dogs during their time here at the shelter and processes adoptions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for care of the dogs which includes feeding, medicating, observing for signs of illness, exercising, training, laundry, picking up dog waste, and helping clean the facility
- Manage dogs and interactions in groups
- Be able or can learn to manage dogs with specific behaviors
- Supervise, motivate, appreciate and direct volunteers to assist with tasks
- Greet/assist customers interested in adopting dogs or directing them towards dogs that would be a fit for their requirements (Matchmaking)
- Communicate with different teams (foster, clinic, intake, etc) to collect necessary information to care for and adopt a dog out appropriately
- Process dog adoptions (onsite and in foster homes)
- Create bios and behavior summaries to facilitate process of dogs being adopted.
- Use electronic data systems to find information/process adoptions
- Receive and sort donations
- Process dogs going to/or coming from Foster Program
- Education of visitors who have questions about Austin Pets Alive! and our No-Kill Mission.
PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to routinely lift 40-50 pounds
- Must be able to remain active throughout the day and navigate all areas inside and outside of the Tarrytown adoption center, which includes steps and narrow areas.
- Must be willing to work in all weather conditions
- Willing to work in a loud environment with barking dogs
- Some of the work for this position requires moderate strenuous physical activity
- Must have physical ability to perform cleaning duties quickly and on schedule
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have experience handling dogs and interacting safely with them
- Must be open and adaptable to new procedures and ways of working
- Must be flexible and able to jump into any task that needs to be completed
- Must be experienced in, and comfortable with, working in an emotionally charged environment with a proven track record of resiliency
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to thrive in a dynamic environment
- Customer Service experience with a drive to provide excellent customer service to all visitors and stakeholders
- Ability to effectively resolve conflict
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills necessary
- Must be available to work weekends and holidays
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Animal care experience preferred
- Knowledge of and passion for the No Kill movement and its aims in Austin and throughout the region
- Spanish language skills a plus

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports directly to Tarrytown Dog manager on duty.
TIME COMMITMENT
This is a part-time position that consists of 3 shifts a week, with an average of about 27 hours per week, 10:00 - 7:30pm daily. Evening and weekend work required. The schedule will vary. Will include weekends and holidays.
