Job Description
PRIMARY FUNCTION(S):
Teach the
Smith Precollege Sustainable Futures
about Sustainable Farming, Community Food Systems and Food Justice for high school students from July 24th to August 4th. Create an academically rigorous 2-week course for students entering 9th-12th grade. Provide training and oversight for an undergraduate Classroom Assistant. This position is temporary and non-benefitted. The salary is a $7000 stipend.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prior to the program:
  • Design a course that is compelling and at the appropriate level for high school students seeking a college-level course and makes use of Smith resources.
  • Generate a course description, biography, and photo for the website and other marketing.
  • Provide and maintain a budget for course materials.
  • Lead two Classroom Assistants (undergraduate students) in approximately 25 hours of academic training from June 26-30.
  • Participate in faculty orientation and training (3 meetings between March-May of approximately 2-3 hours each).
  • Complete all pre-orientation training and paperwork, including training to engage with minors and other paperwork related to working with students under 18.
  • Maintain clear, ongoing communication with the Academic Director and Precollege staff.

During the program:
  • Teach one course (21-26 students; 2 weeks; Monday, July 24 - Friday, August 4 9am-4pm).
  • Use clear, ongoing communication and collaboration with the Classroom Assistants.
  • Maintain a safe and inclusive classroom, keeping equity at the forefront of the pedagogy.
  • Communicate with senior staff about any student classroom concerns.
  • Drive campus vehicles for program field trips, when applicable.
  • Attend the final presentations on the last Friday of the program.

After the program:
  • Complete applicable expense reports and processes.
  • Write recommendations for each student in the class.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: Master’s degree in the course’s field and ideally 5+ years of experience teaching high school or college-level classes.
Hiring is contingent on the completion of the following pre-program requirements in a timely manner.
  • CORI/SORI criminal check
  • Online child safety training
  • Health profile and required immunizations (all health information is kept confidential)
Priority will be given to educators of sustainable agriculture, global agriculture, community food systems, food justice, and food security. Similar fields and experience will be considered.
