Brief Description
The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) is searching for individuals to fill positions within the Substation Department of the Rail District’s Power & Way Section. The position of Substation Maintainer 448 is responsible for the daily/seasonal facility and electrical and electronic component maintenance of our 17 Substations along the Blue, Green and Red Lines of our Rapid Transit System. We utilize high-voltage electricity from local utility suppliers to provide traction power for our Rapid Transit System.
Detailed Description
Duties: Tests, cleans, adjusts, and/or repairs all power related machinery. Cleans and inspects rectifiers; reads the diode-indicating fuses. Cleans and inspects AC switchgear relay and switches. Tests, cleans and/or repairs worn parts on air compressor units and exhaust fans. This position will promote a safe and secure atmosphere, follow all safety and security rules and perform other related duties as assigned. Works overtime as necessitated by Operational needs.
Job Requirements
Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have a High School Diploma or GED. Applicants must have successfully completed technical high school or post high school courses in electrical theory, both AC and DC. Maintainers must have three (3) or more years of experience working on high voltage power distribution or related traction and electrification systems by either in-house experience, or recognized trade school, or apprenticeship training program. Applicants must have the ability to work around high electrical voltages. Applicants must have a valid Ohio Driver's License with four (4) points or less.

Successful candidates will be expected to pass a background check and post-offer physical that is job related and consistent with business necessity.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time. The employee is frequently required to bend, stoop, climb, reach with hands and arms, handle or feel, see with normal visual acuity, talk, speak and hear. The employee is occasionally required to lift materials up to 50 lbs. The employee is regularly required to monitor a video display terminal.

Mental Demands:
Reading, watching, studying, observing, focused listening. Concentrated attention to detail for prolonged periods of time. Auditing, inspecting, tabulating data, proofreading, analyzing and evaluating.

Additional Information:
The performance of these duties may be required at any time of the day or night, any day and night of the week. The position is a bargaining unit position. The position is also safety sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Examination Information: Candidates selected to participate in the hiring process will be notified of the exact time and place of the examination. The examination process will consist of three parts: a written examination, performance assessment and/or interview, and record evaluation (for internal candidates only). Candidates must attain a minimum of 70% on all parts of the process, except 60% on the interview portion, to move forward in the process. Candidates that meet the minimum requirements and are selected to continue in the process will be sent an email notification for the written test. A list of study resources is attached to this posting.

Weights for a final score are as follows for external candidates: Written 30%, Performance 70%. Weights for a final score are follows for internal candidates: Written 30%, Performance Assessment 55%, Record Evaluation 15%. The Record Evaluation score will not be considered if the candidate does not reach the minimum score for each assessment (Written, Performance Assessment, or Interview) of the selection process.

For internal candidates: All assessment components of the selection process must reach a minimum score before the Record Evaluation score is considered. All candidates must score a minimum composite score of 70% in order to establish eligibility for the portion. Internal candidates must meet all record evaluation criteria in order to gain the 15% weighting. Records evaluation information includes a review of the following:

  • 5 or more absence occurrences
  • 2 or more AWOL or absence control suspensions
  • 3 or more active written reminders (regardless of the level)
  • 5 or more misses (regardless of whether they are active or not active)
  • 4 or more active tardies
  • Drug or alcohol suspension
  • Commercial Drivers License (CDL) suspension
  • Active Decision Making Leave (DML)
