POSITION DESCRIPTION


Position Title: Staff Accountant


Company: STG Branded Division


Department: Finance


Location: Richmond


We are seeking an experienced Staff Accountant to be responsible for the accurate and timely reporting of accounting and financial results. This will be a hands-on position that will interact with business unit leadership and coordinate with teammates in various departments to ensure the proper execution of accounting functions and the accurate reporting of financial results. The position will be located at the Branded Division offices of the Scandinavian Tobacco Group in Richmond, Virginia.


You will perform accounting and analysis functions that support the compilation of accurate monthly, quarterly, and yearly financial results. Additionally, you will be responsible for special projects as required by the Finance Business Partner & Controller.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:


Monthly Closing/Reconciliation

  • Creates and enters journal entry transactions in conjunction with the monthly closing process
  • Performs analysis of balance sheet reserves, including review of activity and the evaluation of the adequacy of reserves
  • Prepares various account reconciliations

State Excise Tax Reporting and Government Reporting

  • Prepare and submit state excise tax returns on a monthly/quarterly and annual basis
  • Renew state tobacco licenses as needed
  • Prepare and submit government reports as needed

Internal Control Compliance

  • Responsible for updating and maintaining internal control documentation as required by the corporate parent (Scandinavian Tobacco Group)
  • Validates and tests compliance with key controls on a monthly basis.

Audit

  • Responsible for preparation of audit schedules as requested by external auditors during annual financial statement audit

POSITION IN THE ORGANIZATION:

  • Reports to: Accounting Manager
  • Supervises: No direct or indirect reports

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal:

    • Vice Presidents and cost center managers at STG Branded Division and Scandinavian Tobacco Group (Denmark).
    • Accounting Manager.
    • Manager of Accounts Receivable and Credit

External: External auditors


WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA desirable; 3-5 years of accounting experience; public accounting experience desirable


SKILLS:

  • Ability to prioritize various tasks in order to effectively manage multiple ongoing tasks/projects and to deliver complete, accurate, and timely analyses.
  • Ability to initiate and complete tasks with minimum direction/supervision
  • Ability to work at the detail level as well as understand the larger landscape
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) plus enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, preferably AX and Oracle

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal controls; International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) accounting experience a plus

OTHER:

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively work with others; good attendance is required
  • Fluent in English language (oral and written)
  • Heavy computer use and occasional extended workdays are expected in this position, negligible travel required
  • Must be willing and able to work in the presence of others who may enjoy occasionally smoking cigars or pipe tobacco
