Our E&S Underwriting department is seeking an Underwriter Trainee/Underwriter to join either our New England or Metro team. For New England those located in proximity to Windsor, CT, or Worcester, MA., and for Metro those located in NY, NJ or PA are preferred however, all qualified applicants regardless of location will be considered.

Position Overview/Summary: Trainee and entry level position for Specialty Underwriting career path. You will obtain fundamental knowledge and skills to launch a career in Property & Casualty or Professional Lines underwriting. With successful achievement of learning and development objectives, earns Underwriting Letter of Authority and begins operating with high degree of coaching and supervision, and guidance. May begin to handle small accounts if appropriate.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
  • Build understanding of the Hanover structure and Specialty strategies
  • Develop understanding of how own role fits into the overall business, internally and externally
  • Gain exposure to and basic proper utilization of underwriting systems
  • Demonstrate ability to apply sensible judgment within daily responsibilities (e.g. evaluating risks, need for added input or support, general decision making)
  • Successfully demonstrate readiness to assume new or renewal UW review
Technical Underwriting
  • Begin to build knowledge of the New Business (NB) workflow including systems, processes, tools and guidelines
  • Develop basic understanding and the purpose of coverages provide by, and features of the business line and can interpret policy provisions
  • Gain exposure to and basic utilization of underwriting systems
  • Understands and begins to apply the Hanover approach to underwriting assessment
  • Independently handles less complex new and renewal accounts within defined authority levels. Makes recommendations on risk selection, coverage, pricing and managing of sales proposals with oversight
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the significance of the Claims loss ratio for the pricing of a risk
  • Starts to develop an understanding of why different rates are applied to different types of risks and the factors that can affect the premium rate for an individual risk
Portfolio Management and Financial Acumen
  • Demonstrates an awareness of the data that indicates how an underwriting portfolio is performing
  • Familiarization with implications of building, maintaining, and analyzing an underwriting portfolio and agency portfolio with regards to profitability and diversity in coverage
  • Begins to develop ability to analyze underwriting and financial data and interpret the data “story”
Sales Management
  • Understands the partnership strategy and sales process
  • Understands pipelining concepts and Hanover practices and guidelines
  • Can articulate why this process is critical to Specialty underwriting success. Begins to develop a basic pipeline
  • Understands the Hanover Value Proposition and is able to articulate it to others (internally or externally)
  • Knows the importance of positive customer experiences in developing good relationships.
WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • Robust Internship and leadership experience (insurance related internship preferred)
  • Generally, 0-3 years of underwriting, or equivalent insurance services, experience
  • Demonstrates ability to adapt quickly to change, identify, analyze, and solve problems and willingness to being open to new and different ways of thinking
  • Basic understanding of insurance policies and coverage language.
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate with all levels of external and/or internal business partners within scope of responsibility, team and/or matrix environment.
