GENERAL SUMMARY

Under general supervision, participate in daily automated and manual route collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste or recycling materials.

SUPERVISION

General supervision is provided by the Solid Waste Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operates an automated solid waste collection truck manipulating controls of side and front loading and unloading apparatus device, or packer- type truck, on designated route within the Lower Valley Water District boundaries to pick up and load garbage, bulky waste and/or recyclable material onto truck.
  • Loads trash containers along established route, positioning truck to make pickup, and operate control board to move loading arm and grabber to pick-up container and dump trash into packing chamber.
  • Drive the loaded truck to the landfill and dumps the loads, returning to the designated area.
  • Detects, identifies and reports improper equipment performance and makes necessary operational adjustments. Performs pre- and post-trip maintenance related to vehicle inspections and operator services such as lubricating, monitoring fluid levels, checking tire pressure, hose connections, and other related items on checklist.
  • Washes truck on a regular basis.
  • Makes a continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turn-around times, streamline work processes, and works cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service.
  • Occasionally performs manual collections of solid waste by leaving truck to roll out disabled or other required special customer containers.
  • Responds to customers inquires involving explaining requirements regarding content, packing weight, container type, pick-up times, and placement of garbage. Reports refuse collection code violations or obstructions to supervisor.
  • Records mileage and fuel consumption of truck driven.
  • Complies with all safety standards as they pertain to equipment and facility operations.
  • Accomplishes and maintains safe work practices according to District’s rules and policies assigned duties using safe work practices.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, officials, and the public.
  • Performs any other duties as required. Perform duties of immediate supervisor or coworkers as necessary to ensure continuity of operations during absences.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or GED.

Bilingual preferred (English and Spanish).

EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience operating trucks (two ton and over) or related automotive equipment.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Valid Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License, preferred “A” or equivalent from another state and must have an acceptable driving records.

Sit-down forklift certified

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Application of general knowledge of safe maintenance and operation of heavy equipment used to collect, transport and dispose of solid waste and hazardous materials.
  • Application of general knowledge of federal, state and local laws concerning handling and disposal of solid waste and hazardous materials.
  • Application of general knowledge of hand tools used, including operation of computerized, on board data collection.
  • Ability to operate automated solid waste collection truck with hydraulic lifting device packer-type truck to collect garbage on assigned route.
  • Ability to be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Ability to be customer service oriented.
  • Ability to follow federal, state and City solid waste management laws, rules and regulations and state and local labor and occupational safety and health rules and regulations.
  • Clear, concise oral and written communication to prepare and present daily documentation logs and reports.
  • Must be able to maintain a clean driving record, i.e., must remain insurable under the District’s liability insurance policy.

Environment: The Solid Waste Driver is frequently exposed to moving machinery and equipment, hazardous chemicals, uneven terrain, extreme weather conditions, animals, reptiles, fumes and materials common to collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste, recycling and hazardous materials. Occasional exposure to hostile customers or citizens.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and field environment; to stand, stoop, reach, bend, kneel, squat, climb, and walk on uneven terrain, loose soil, and sloped surfaces; to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds. Use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate equipment, and reach with hands and arms. Frequently climbing in and out of trucks; sitting for an extended period of time.

Vision: Must be able to see in the normal visual range, with or without corrective devices. Must be able to read.

Hearing: Must be able to hear in the normal audio range, with or without corrective devices.

Travel: Travel is primarily local during the business day.

Personal Protective Equipment Required: Safety equipment includes hard hat, traffic vest, ear plugs, eye protection, safety gloves, and safety shoes.'
