The SHIFT Program at the University of Texas at Austin is seeking the right candidate as their Outreach Specialist.

SHIFT is a campus-wide initiative that aims to change the campus culture around substance use from one of misuse to one grounded in well-being. This position helps support essential programs that drive culture change and directly interacts with students.

The purpose of this position is to support the foundation of existing programming by facilitating communication, outreach, and administrative organization. This will allow SHIFT’s programs to grow and expand, while cultivating new partnerships as a team.

This position is full time, 40 hours a week; typical hours are Monday-Friday 8:00-5:00, however, there may be occasional night and weekend work. The position is non-permanent, with a two-year funding commitment established. The position has potential for yearly renewal thereafter.

Key Function Areas:

General Outreach and Program Support

  • Represent SHIFT in various capacities, including but not limited to tabling, resource fairs, events, and workshops
  • Help create communications directed toward students with an effort to increase student interest and engagement in SHIFT related programs (SHIFT List, SHIFT Makers, other outreach)
  • Helps oversee student requests for workshops and presentations
  • Works collaboratively to create content for presentations and/or workshops
  • Facilitates workshops and programming as needed

Communication development and facilitation

  • Creates content relevant to programming areas to promote and inform various audiences, predominantly students
  • Works with Communications & Programming Coordinator to keep program information correct and up to date on all media sources

Provides organizational and administrative foundation for SHIFT Makers program

  • Manages supply inventory, including organization of purchase requests and purchase orders
  • Coordinates scheduling of student employees and staff for all events
  • Leads interpersonal communications and organization related to events, including student employees as well as requesting parties, vendors, etc., and follow up with evaluative tools

Evaluation support

  • Assist in executing assessment strategy, including coordination of all pre/post tests
  • Be able to report on quantitative data annually, such as number of events held, budget costs, etc.
  • Help incorporate relevant data into programs accordingly

Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to:

  • Attending other meetings on behalf of SHIFT
  • Participate in other committees and/or working groups relevant to prevention and well-being
  • Respond to correspondence in a timely manner
  • Other duties as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, public administration, public affairs, public policy, the social sciences, higher education/student development, health education or a related field.
  • Knowledge of current/emerging college health issues, intervention methods, health behavior change theories, ecological framework, and evidence-based practice.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to deliver sensitive content to large audiences.
  • Experience creating programs and messages about a variety of health topics.
  • Experience designing and delivering programs to a diverse population.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex job duties and project-based work. High level organizational skills.
  • Ability to take initiative, balance multiple projects, and work autonomously and as a member of a team

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience in substance misuse prevention strategy and programming
  • Knowledge and experience with assessment methods and evaluative processes
  • Demonstrated experience using innovative technology and methods to enhance outreach efforts
  • Work experience within a higher education setting or with the college student population
  • Ability to synthesize feedback from multiple stakeholders to enhance programs and messages.

Salary Range

$42,000 per year + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

  • May work around standard office conditions
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation
  • Use of manual dexterity
  • Exposure to chemicals and commercial items typically found in offices, medical clinics, and building repairs/maintenance.
