Overview:
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is reimagining our Lab-wide Software Quality Program. We are looking for individuals with a software development background to help us ensure success in this initiative. Have you developed or tested software in a high-compliance environment (aerospace, medical/pharmaceutical, nuclear, etc.)? Do you understand and appreciate the value of software quality requirements from inception to implementation and maintenance?

The Software Quality Engineer (SQE) role at PNNL is to support programs and projects in implementing software quality assurance processes and practices through all phases of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) to meet established requirements.

Responsibilities:
We are looking for an individual with experience in implementing programmatic changes to modernize our approach to software quality assurance within the Laboratory.

The following is an overview of areas that you will be working and collaborating in, but should not be considered a comprehensive list:
  • Drive implementation and execution of PNNL’s next-generation Software Quality Assurance (SQA) Program and processes
  • Understands the value of software quality and communicates this value to project staff
  • Comprehensive knowledge of software development, software engineering processes and methods.
  • Builds collaborative relationships and leverages networks to accomplish goals while leading cross-functional problem-solving teams.
  • Utilize your expertise to improve and streamline the implementation of software quality program requirements throughout the development and implementation phases.
  • Leader in mitigating risk and ensuring compliance while striving for increased efficiency and effectiveness.
  • A leader and mentor to stakeholders in properly managing software quality and performance.
  • Reviews complex software test cases and requirements to interpret/analyze results to report, communicate, and work through issues with software engineers.
  • Author SQA guidelines, processes, templates, and best practice documentation to seamlessly integrate SQA standards and policies.
  • Translates SQA requirements to project staff to establish a clear understanding of the intent and goal
  • Well-developed understanding of applying nuclear quality assurance and the requirements for qualifying Safety Software.
  • Partners with business and key stakeholders to drive continuous improvement in the Quality Organization and across PNNL.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA and 7 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • MS/MA or higher and 5 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • AA and 16 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • HS/GED and 18 years of relevant experience
  • Qualifying experience must demonstrate expertise in understanding and/or applying Quality Requirements to materials, processes, submittals or final products to ensure they meet established requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Software development, testing, administration, deployment, and/or management
  • Experience working in an agile software environment
  • Experience working in a highly regulated environment/industry with a robust Environment, Health, Safety, and Quality (EHS&Q) culture. (e.g., nuclear, food, oil and gas, transportation, medical, pharmaceutical, aerospace, etc.).
  • Experience working in a research and development environment where software is prototyped and developed.
  • Experience with any of the following: NQA-1, DOE O414.1D (safety software) and/or 10 CFR 830 requirements.
  • Experience in quality program development, maintenance, and implementation.
  • Quality Process/Workflow Mapping
  • A holder or past holder of any of the following certifications/licenses: ASQ CQE, CSQE, CQA, ASNT NDE (Level II or III), AWS CWI, PELicense, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.
Additional Information:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
Testing Designated Position (TDP):
This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
