Senior Research Scientist; Chemical Development in Albany, NY

The Senior Research Scientist is responsible for conducting a productive experimental program; managing scientific efforts and resources; communicating results and issues within the projects and the organization effectively; and leading a team of professional scientists.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development projects including assigning duties to junior staff, summarizing data in reports, troubleshooting technical problems, leading client meetings and achieving timelines and budgets. This position will require managing up to five projects at a time with associated staff. Stimulate appropriate cooperative efforts on development projects between departments
  • Develop robust processes to the target compounds that ensure safe and reproducible scaling in large scale equipment. Develop alternate synthetic routes to target molecules, and modify reactants and/or equipment as required. Solve the more complex chemical problems which arise in the group. Display expertise in analytical chromatography (e.g. HPLC), spectroscopic techniques and purification of organic compounds. Understand the concepts of reaction kinetics, design of experiments, solubility and crystallization, mass transfer, heat transfer and process safety
  • Supervise the work of scientists assigned. This includes the responsibility for the appropriate motivation, education, efficiency, evaluation, and productivity of the scientists. Conduct performance reviews. Ensure employees have access to tools and information for career development opportunities and actively participates in employee growth and development. Plan and deliver on-the-job training
  • Conduct laboratory operations in a safe manner. Ensure process safety guidelines are followed when scaling processes. Maintain familiarity with the Chemical Hygiene Plan. Follow responsible actions regarding chemical disposal. Maintain compliance with all regulations at the federal, state, and local levels
  • Participate in continuing education courses and/or scientific meetings to improve knowledge and skills in pertinent scientific and managerial fields, as appropriate
  • Perform other related duties as may be reasonably assigned in the course of business

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, or other applicable natural science field OR; Master’s degree and three years of relevant experience OR; Bachelor’s and five years of relevant experience.
  • Chemical Hygiene training

Education, experience, location and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
