HJF is seeking an Epidemiologist II or III to support Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program (IDCRP) within the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) located at IDCRP Headquarters in Bethesda, MD. The Epidemiologist will assist with disease surveillance portfolio management and development of network strategic goals. The current research portfolio includes an international clinical trial evaluating single dose antibiotic treatment for diarrhea. The epidemiologist would assist with coordinating data management at the 3 sites and the final analysis that includes translational research with PCR and microbiome data. The research area also has several ongoing observational studies needing statistical support including cohort studies and case-control analysis.

Responsibilities:
  • Able to formulate research questions and associated statistical analysis plan, conducts literature reviews, and formulates reports for presentations and publications. Reviews and provides feedback on new concepts, protocols and sub-studies.
  • Proactively evaluates data issues in ongoing clinical trial and performs final analyses for clinical and translational (PCR) data.
  • Interacts regularly with clinical investigators, clinical research managers and coordinators, regulatory and safety monitoring staff, laboratory personnel, data coordination center personnel, data analysts, biostatisticians, program managers and administrative staff. Develops metrics and generates quality control reports to optimize the performance of clinical sites and the coordinating center. Provides statistical and project status reports.
  • Develops and accomplishes protocols and helps prepare funding applications for grants and other means. Leads in writing sections of protocols that require statistical input. Initiates and supports collaboration with PIs and provides guidance in appropriate statistical methods as well as input into design and methodology of biomedical research protocols.
  • Assists Principal Investigator with engaging outside agencies and communicates with and oversees reporting aspects of collaborations with academic institutions and federal, state, and local authorities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience and proficiency in advanced statistical analysis. Knowledge and experience with logistic regression, general linear models with repeated measures, survival analyses, and other statistical techniques for longitudinal and missing data.
  • Competent in statistical programming language(s) - SAS, STATA, R, Python. Experience in the design of clinical research studies, epidemiologic studies and trials; knowledge of medical science and research; statistics; study design.
  • Ability to communicate effectively; ability to make effective presentations and publish; excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and to manage multiple tasks, and in a team environment.
  • Database experience including building and querying databases, and proficiency with data extraction and transforming procedures.
  • Knowledge of federal and local regulations and policies pertinent to research involving human subjects. Prior experience in a clinical research environment; knowledge of biomedical sciences and clinical research.
  • Experience with utilization of electronic medical records preferred; background in microbiology, quantitative PCR data and infectious disease epidemiology preferred.
  • Prior presentation and publication record preferred; excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish goals and agendas; occasional travel may be required.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Direct Supervisor: Direct authority to make decisions on the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases; conduct employee performance evaluations and directs work activities.

Qualifications:

  • This position will take place primarily in a clinic setting.
Education and Experience
  • Level II
    • Master's Degree.
    • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.
  • Level II
    • Master’s Degree required. Doctoral Degree preferred.
    • Minimum of 6-8 years of experience is required.
