What you will be doing in the role of a Senior Coordinator, Federal Policy and Advocacy

Empowered by our expansive grassroots network, Komen is leading the fight for those impacted by breast cancer locally, in our states and in Washington, D.C. Komen works to identify, through a transparent and broad-based, intensive vetting and selection process, the advocacy issues that have the greatest potential impact on Komen’s mission.

The Sr. Coordinator, Federal Policy & Advocacy supports and promotes Susan G. Komen’s public policy & advocacy initiatives related to breast cancer and public health policy within the federal government. This individual will assist in the execution of federal advocacy campaigns; support tracking of federal policy work; assist in building relationships with federal officials and their staff; assists in the execution of federal advocacy events and programming; monitors federal legislative and regulatory climate for impact on policy priorities.

What you will bring to the table

  • Researches and tracks current and emerging federal policy that affects Komen, its constituents and the cancer community.
  • Monitors Congressional activity for updates on key legislation (e.g. cosponsors, committee action) and synthesizes data to report out.
  • Assists with the planning and execution of large and small-scale federal policy and advocacy events including but not limited to the annual Advocacy Summit, smaller advocacy days, in-district meetings, Congressional briefings, site visits, receptions, etc.
  • Aids in executing Komen’s advocacy activities throughout the federal appropriations process.
  • Assists in coordinating relationships with Members of Congress and their staff, to establish open two-way communications that advance Komen’s goals.
  • Tracks and evaluates federal activities to ensure advocacy effectiveness and report metrics to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Drafts messaging and resource materials for federal priority policy issues (e.g. toolkits, talking points, fact sheets).
  • Supports federal online advocacy messaging and strategy, including writing/editing action alerts and letters to legislators.
  • Identifies, attends and reports back on relevant Congressional committee and commission hearings.
  • Contributes to the maintenance of Komen’s federal relationship database and builds insight based on stakeholder research.
  • Prepares data to be used in federal lobbying compliance reporting and lobbyist registrations.
  • Assists in maintaining and building relationships with key coalition and community partners.
  • Promote an organizational culture that values trust, commitment to the mission, scientific integrity, and professional and organizational growth.

We already know you will also have

  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, public administration, political science, government affairs, communications or other relevant field and 1 year of directly related experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of federal health policy processes.
  • Proven ability to work independently and creatively, meeting strict deadlines, in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work with policymakers and staff of all ideologies; ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Solid organizational skills and advanced-level proficiency with MS Office products.

We would love if you also have

  • Requires excellent written and verbal communications skills, plus the ability to perform detailed policy research.
  • Familiarity with breast cancer policy.
  • Experience in public policy, advocacy, and implementing federal policy campaigns.
  • Experience working on or with Capitol Hill and/or in health-related government agencies.
