The Washington State Attorney General’s Office's
Torts Division has an opening for a managing attorney in the Torts Investigations Section.

The Managing Attorney for the Torts Division’s Investigations Section supports the AGO and the Division by providing excellent, independent, and ethical legal services focused on the investigation of tort claims against state agencies and employees. This is an integral part of the work of the AGO’s Torts Division, which defends state agencies, employees and officials in all lawsuits for money damages assigned by the Washington State Department of Enterprise Services.

Duties

The Investigations Section Chief supervises four supervising investigators and one paralegal supervisor, as well as serves as second line supervisor for 23 investigators in the section. The Section Chief coordinates with division leaders regarding the supervision of the section’s other professional support staff. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the successful candidate will provide leadership and strategic guidance over division and section initiatives with particular emphasis on developing effective ways of managing workload and using technology to streamline processes. The Investigations Section Chief is also a member of the Division’s management team and is expected to contribute positively to the leadership of the division.

The Section Chief reviews all tort claims, identifying critical legal issues and making an initial decision about claim status and assignment. The Section Chief analyzes claims for the potential of third party insurance and oversees that claims are tendered to insurers when appropriate. Upon completion of an investigation, the Section Chief reviews the investigations done by Torts investigative staff and provides feedback about potential next steps.

The Section Chief also oversees investigations related to lawsuits, and ensures coordination between the Investigations Section and the Division’s trial teams. All work by the Section Chief is performed with a goal of ensuring effective use of investigative resources and helping to control defense costs for client agencies consistent with the AGO’s mission and strategic plan.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting requirements to serve as an assistant attorney general, m inimum qualifications include:
  • Must have at least five years of experience in progressively more complex trials in the area of torts, civil rights, and/or employment liability.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Supervisory or management experience is highly desirable; and
  • Knowledge of insurance including issues related to tendering claims.
To serve as an Assistant Attorney General, one must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; and be licensed to practice law in Washington state. (Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission by motion will also be considered.) Managing AAG salaries are set between $75,228 and $140,916. The exact amount is set in accordance with Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA.
