Nexus-Onarga Family Healing is located approximately 90 miles south of Chicago, only a few miles from I-57 on a historic site in Onarga, IL. Nexus-Onarga provides boys, ages 10 to 20, a structured, homelike environment where they can safely address their problematic sexual behaviors and their emotional and behavioral issues. Nexus-Onarga is part of Nexus Family Healing, a national nonprofit network of mental health agencies providing innovative, customized help for children and families struggling with emotional, behavioral, and mental health issues.

Position Summary:
The School Coordinator serves as the school treatment liaison and is responsible for the tasks associated with meeting licensing requirements and maintaining high standards of educational services throughout the school while providing ongoing support to the School Administration and Education team in the disciplinary areas that include behavior support, student development, and student assessments that support student success.

Primary responsibilities:
(The following list is not comprehensive but highlights the major areas of responsibility for the position.)

  • Provides supervision and direction to all Teaching Assistants, Substitute Teaching staff and Behavioral Specialist staff.
  • Participates in the interview and selection process of all education department staff; supervises and participates in the process to orientate, mentor, train and develop teaching assistants, and ensures the process is consistently and effectively administered.
  • Ensures adequate staff coverage and maintains a pool of substitute teachers and teaching assistants.
  • Actively monitors, evaluates and the effectiveness of staff performance, as well as behavior management of students in the classroom setting.
  • Identifies student areas of strength and need with students and their families during the intake meetings and assesses appropriate educational support needed; Provides an outline of student functional behavior for school staff.
  • As needed, serves as administrative designee at student Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings.
  • Continually assesses/identifies student academic growth and needs in the classroom, together develops/coordinates instructional activities to best meet student’s needs.
  • Works with the local school district curriculum department on curricular purchases and instructional opportunities for the school and researches other resources for staff development in conjunction with the local school district.
  • Supports the efforts of ongoing compliance as related to Illinois State Borad of Education (ISBE) and provides leadership and support in this area to assigned staff.
  • Serves as an education liaison as assigned with internal academy departments and external agencies and contacts.
  • Provides crisis intervention and apply de-escalation techniques when appropriate while maintaining appropriate boundaries and relationships with students.

Required Education and Licensure:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a school setting.
  • Valid driver’s license required. Must meet state regulating agency and Home Office driving requirements

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Two (2) or more years supervisory experience.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to assist staff in proper restraining of residents, must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and up to 100 with assistance, must be able to twist, bend and stretch in a manner conducive to the execution of daily activities, and the employee is required to talk, hear, adjust focus, and may require extended periods of sitting.
