Job Summary
Operates school bus on a regular route to transport children to/from Head Start centers and other locations in accordance with the department established policies and procedures.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
(In addition to the following, other duties may be assigned)
Operates assigned bus on a regular route to safely transport children to/from Head Start centers.
Uses established procedures and performs daily pre-trip inspection of bus and takes actions as necessary to ensure safe operations.
Completes department paperwork correctly and submit by deadline.
Observes children on bus for any abuse, neglect, or illness and follows procedures to report and respond to observations.
Maintain interior cleanliness of vehicle, floor, windows, trash, personal belongings, etc. Sweeps bus floor daily, cleans interior weekly and exterior when weather permits.
Ensures assigned bus has at least a ½ tank of fuel before parking at the end of each day.
Wears neat, clean and freshly pressed transportation related shirt, while transporting children.
Wears agency picture ID badge at all times.
Follows department accident reporting procedures.
Displays basic map reading and directional routing skills.
Teach school bus safety to children.
Participates in screening, training, agency activities and field trips as assigned.
Maintains positive public relations skills.
Must complete the “walk back” procedure every time after transporting children.
Covers Food Service Driver routes, when needed.
Required Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Must pass yearly ODE physical and all drug screenings. Must maintain current certification for first-aid, child abuse, CPR, and communicable disease.
Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) and one year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of diverse ethnic groups.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to parents and employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to apply basic mathematical functions.
Reasoning Ability
The ability to use sound judgement to make well thought-out and informed decisions, the ability to apply knowledge and understanding, and use critical thinking skills to problem solve situations that involve several variables.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
Valid State of Ohio Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsement with four or fewer points. A valid Ohio Pre-Service Certificate of Completion.
Technology Skills
Basic technology skills which include: email management skills; computer network knowledge applicable to your department’s systems.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and sit. Must occasionally walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; reach with hands or arms; and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision.

Ability to focus, make clear decisions, use judgement, be stable and can control emotions, remain calm under adversity, ability to handle stress; be able to remain calm and professional in the face of challenging behaviors.
Work Hours
40 hours/week, generally Monday-Friday, with some evening/weekend work required.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather and will be exposed to hot, cold, and wet weather when transporting children. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate from engine noise and children’s activity.
