Title: Scholar Development Coordinator

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholar Development (OURSD) is a key resource for students to engage fully in their CMU experience through research and creative pursuits and to explore options such as competitive national and international fellowships as they prepare for their own personal and professional success. The OURSD team works directly with students, faculty, advisors, staff members, and alumni, as well as academic and administrative partners to support each student’s educational journey. OURSD takes an integrated approach to the high-impact practices of undergraduate research and scholar development, including competitive fellowship advising. We desire to build upon our nationally recognized work to broaden access to these opportunities, expand innovative approaches and programs and strengthen our assessment efforts related to student competency development.
We seek an innovative and equity-focused team member committed to empowering students’ intellectual, personal and professional development to join us as a Scholar Development Coordinator. As a part of the Office of the Vice Provost for Education and reporting directly to the OURSD Director, the Scholar Development Coordinator will provide crucial administrative and programming support to the Director and Associate Director in both the undergraduate research and fellowships advising domains. The Scholar Development Coordinator will enable further growth and innovation in new and existing OURSD programs, as we seek to increase student engagement in the high-impact educational practices our office provides.
Core responsibilities include:
Undergraduate Research
  • Assist with undergraduate research advising, to include initial intake meetings, acquainting students with resources to explore faculty research and undergraduate research programs, and recruiting students for internal programs (HURAY, SURA, SURF, SURG, etc.)
  • Assist with internal undergraduate research programming, including informational sessions, workshops, panels, and group advising sessions
  • Assist in development and implementation of Undergraduate Research Ambassadors program, with oversight from the Associate Director
  • Providing support for NSF-funded undergraduate research opportunities on campus
    • Supporting campus-wide initiative to increase NSF REU Supplements
    • Interfacing with REU site participants during summer programs
    • Facilitating scholar development programming for NSF site and supplement participants
    • Creating connection points between NSF and SURF/SURA cohorts
Fellowships and Scholarships
  • Assist with fellowship/scholarship advising, with particular focus on providing support for Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship applicants
  • Fellowship/scholarship administrative tasks
    • Assist in development and implementation of targeted fellowship/scholarship recruitment
    • Coordinate fellowship/scholarship review and endorsement processes, including Fulbright campus interviews
  • Assist with internal fellowship/scholarship programming
    • Coordinate fellowship/scholarship deadlines, informational sessions, and committees
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in any field
  • 1-3 years of experience in higher education, including: teaching, advising, or mentorship (could include as a graduate student); program coordination; writing support; research administration; knowledge of national and international fellowships and scholarships
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in any field
  • Prior experience participating in research as an undergraduate student
  • Experience applying for national and international fellowships and scholarships
  • Experience supporting applicants for national and international fellowships and scholarships
