Job Title: Charge Nurse (RN)

Reports to: Director of Nursing

Department: Nursing Classification: Hourly

The Charge Nurse, RN, will be under the supervision of the Director of Nursing (DON) to optimize patient care. In the absence of the DON, the Charge Nurse will oversee the entire nursing team, ensuring quality customer service and compliance with all federal, state, and local rules and regulations and the policies and procedures set by Anew/Assurance Health, LLC.

The Charge Nurse may be responsible for administrative responsibilities such as evaluating patient outcomes and deliverance in the coordination and continuity of exceptional patient care. In addition, the Charge Nurse is critical in providing input to the hospital’s management team in administrative decision-making, particularly regarding the hospital's nursing services' role, functions, operations, resources, and fiscal management.

The Charge Nurse manages RNs, LPNs, CNAs, MHTs, and SNAs and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to provide optimal patient care. Please note the following outlined duties and responsibilities:

1. Intake Screening and Admission of new patients.

2. Ensure the Provider’s orders are followed, including notifications to the Provider of admissions, acute care concerns, patient advocacy, and other applicable notifications.

3. Provide oversite and coordination of the clinical care provided to acute psychiatric patients to ensure that the high standard of care outlined by the organization’s mission, vision, and values is achieved.

4. Adherence to safety, environmental, and infection control standards.

5. The Charge Nurse must efficiently and effectively plan, organize, direct, and help implement a comprehensive institution-wide nursing program maintaining the standards of nursing practice within the hospital.

6. Maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, including applicable nursing department assessments and initiatives to measure, analyze, and improve the quality of nursing care.

7. Works collaboratively with DON and Quality Nurse to evaluate data and implement changes to improve Quality Indicators and Quality Measures scores. Develops, implements, monitors, and adapts quality measures to ensure patient/customer satisfaction and appropriate clinical treatment outcomes.

8. Assists in staff assignments, evaluates performance, and recommends personnel actions.

9. In-service all new equipment and products to appropriate staff. Assists in implementing and using standardized equipment and procedures throughout the hospital whenever possible. Assists with care and maintenance of patient care equipment and supplies.

10. Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, research activities, in-service meetings, and workshops.

11. Maintains and demonstrates knowledge of current techniques, guidelines, and regulations. Interprets relevant policies and standards for effective and accurate implementation.

12. Attends meetings as required. Participates in medical, administrative, educational, hazardous waste, safety, wellness, pharmacy and therapeutics, integrated care, and infection control committees as designated.

13. Reviews all Incident Reports for completeness with appropriate interventions, care plan updates, and documentation.

14. Communicates critical information to all interdisciplinary teams to enhance teamwork and efficiency of service delivery.

15. Demonstrates knowledge of processes that support organizational confidentiality, HIPAA Security procedures, and protocols. Follows established HIPAA procedures when using and disclosing protected health information. Maintains and protects patients’ rights and disclosures under the HIPAA Privacy Standards

16. Resourceful and calm in emergencies.

17. Cooperates and maintains good rapport with nursing staff, medical staff, other departments, and visitors, including minimal absences.

18. Complies with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct.

Requirements

Education: BSN preferred.

Experience: Five years of clinical and managerial experience in an acute care psychiatric setting is preferred.

Licensure: Registered Nurse by the State of Kansas, BLS and Crisis Prevention Intervention certifications within 30 days.

Skills: Demonstrates competence to participate in the interdisciplinary formulation of individual treatment plans, provide skilled nursing care and therapy, and direct, monitor, and evaluate the above services. Excellent communication, leadership, and mentoring skills. Ability to implement programs, policies, and procedures necessary to provide quality care and maintain a sound business operation. Ability to follow all applicable policies and procedures, current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern acute psychiatric hospitals. Experience with basic Microsoft Office programs, budgets, finance, and other applicable managerial-level functions.

Labor Conditions: The Charge Nurse may have to participate in direct patient care and simultaneously manage the nursing department. As a result, the Charge Nurse may be exposed to blood-borne pathogens, infectious diseases, and other hazardous bodily wastes. Proper precautions will be taught and provided by the hospital. The position requires considerable walking, stooping, pulling, lifting, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions. Ability to move quickly in response to physician and patient needs, stand for long periods, occasional overhead, and low reaching, and exertion in force of up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 20 lbs. frequently, and up to 10 lbs. constantly. Patient care activities may require lifting to 30 lbs. continuously, up to 40 lbs. occasionally, and up to 100 lbs. rarely.

Complies with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct. Complies with federal and hospital requirements in protecting health information and patient privacy. Some tasks may be reassigned, and others may be assigned as required at the hospital's sole discretion.
