BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the pharmacist, the certified pharmacy technician performs pharmacy-related functions, in compliance with department policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care for all customers as well as all healthcare locations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school graduate or GED equivalent.

Experience: Previous technician experience in a pharmacy or hospital pharmacy desirable.

Certificates, License, Registrations:

Technician registration with the Kansas State Board of Pharmacy. National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) required within one (1) year of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of pharmaceutical services. Ability to perform all necessary pharmacy functions allowed by law (non-judgmental). Attention to detail; organizational skills. Accurate typing skills and basic understanding of computer technology including Word and Excel. Ability to interact positively with physicians, nurses and other employees of the hospital. Maintain compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality.

Physical: Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, and/or 10 pounds of force frequently, or negligible constantly. Walking or standing to a significant degree, or sitting constantly and pushing/pulling controls.

EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS: Subject to minor injuries, back injury, infections, communicable diseases, and exposure to disagreeable sights, odors, and chemicals. This position is responsible for wearing PPE during certain job functions to reduce job hazards. PPE can include: gloves, gown/coat, shoe covers, head/face, eye and ear protection. Each job function requires a different level of PPE; individuals receive initial and annual training to identify the appropriate level of PPE required. Subject to exposure to chemotherapeutic agents. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Adjudicate billing; compare medication administration records with reports obtained from the PYXIS automated dispensing unit and the hospital electronic medical record (EMR). Adjust EMR so that correct units are on the patient bill.
• Receive and process medications ordered from the wholesaler. Price sticker and outdate sticker each product with the appropriate colored sticker for the year it outdates. Verify that the barcode on the product will be recognized by the electronic medical record and the automated dispensing cabinet (ADC) software. Put medications away in the proper location.
• Refill the ADC. Obtain the correct medication required to be restocked in the ADC and, after pharmacist approval, refill the ADC machines in the facility. Ensure that the stock in the ADC cabinet is in date and rotate the stock to minimize expired products. Weekly manual count of Night Cabinet ADC narcotics. Responsibility for out-patient prescription logs and data collection.
• Perform unit dose packaging safely. Maintain the log book of such packaging.
• Check all medication cabinets in the facility and all other areas (associated medical clinics) where medications or medical supplies are stored for adequate stock and/or outdated or expired items. Collect outdated and/or expired/expiring medications and oversee destruction or return to a return goods processor. Clean areas and shelving wherever pharmaceuticals are stored as needed.
• Fill the patient-specific medication cassettes with non-ADC products with pharmacist oversight. Restock nursing items: denture tablets and denture adhesive, body wash, ear probe covers, needleless syringes for Enoxaparin, Vial2Bag adapters and insulin pen needles.
• Order drug products from the wholesaler, selecting quality contract products with the best pricing.
• Fill other departments requisitions for medication stock and deliver the order to the correct department.
• Assist the pharmacist in other tasks on the computer and other non-judgmental activities in the preparation of medications including supervised compounding.
• Manage patient records and pharmacy files appropriately. Responsible for audits.
• Communicate effectively with nursing providers and ancillary services to meet the needs of those departments and maintain a positive working relationship and image of the pharmacy department.
