We are Brandon, a boys’ Nonprofit Residential School providing exceptional stabilization, assessment, educational, residential, clinical and case management services. We help boys to know their past does not determine their futures.


Scope of the Position: The nursing department supports family involvement by providing relevant medical information, direct medical care, as well as oversight, and medication support for visits and home passes with family and other significant people in the lives of our youth.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Attend and actively participate in department meetings, treatment team, and required trainings as scheduled.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of child development relevant to the age group of clients in various services.
    • Adapt interventions and provide education according to developmental level of clients to maximize adherence to prescribed medical treatment.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the importance of family/kinship connections to youth in our care and supports those connections by communicating with caregivers about relevant medical issues as well as facilitating visits with family and community supports by coordinating and participating in medication preparation and packing for leaves of absence from the program.
  • Demonstrates an ability to form and maintain positive, nurturing relationships with youth by offering support and encouragement during routine interactions as well as when addressing a medical need.
  • Demonstrates the ability to educate and support the learning of a broad range of skills including those related to:
    • Age appropriate activities and competencies regarding personal health, knowledge about prescribed medications, and self-care.
    • Planning and actively participating in interventions to support and increase these skills and competencies.
  • Demonstrates an empathic understanding of complex trauma and its effects including abuse, loss, and neglect that youth bring to placement. Able to respond therapeutically to pain-based behavior.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of the physical and emotional environment by maintaining the nursing office as a place that is emotionally and physically safe, and appropriately engaging and stimulating, in order to foster growth and resilience.
    • Manage medications, including ordering, tracking, and monitoring for side effects, according to licensing agencies’ policies and regulations to ensure proper medication safety.
  • Support routines of youth by providing coordination and oversight of scheduled and as needed medications, and managing appointments with outside providers in the least disruptive way possible.
    • Participate in on-call rotation to provide weekend nursing support on an as-needed basis.
  • Work as part of a team to identify medical needs, and develop strategies to meet those needs.
    • Complete updated treatment goals and reviews as scheduled to monitor efficacy of strategies.
    • Complete initial and routine assessments to monitor health status.
  • Coordinate transportation for youth for scheduled and emergency medical appointments as needed.
  • Care for program facilities and equipment: organizing, cleaning, sanitizing, and other tasks and duties as assigned, or as needed, to promote a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for youth and staff.
  • Document planned interventions, critical incidents, and relevant general observation of youth and assessment of their skills, behavior, and moods in an objective and professional manner. Demonstrate knowledge of and role in individual youth treatment plans, including their assessment, particular needs, behavioral goals, and identified intervention strategies.
  • Function as Nurse Monitor for the Medication Administration Program (MAP), providing oversight of medication administration and documentation within the school and residences.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Current RN license
  • CPR/First Aid certified
  • Minimum two-years-experience working in a school or healthcare facility
  • Must have a valid MA driver’s license and DEEC CORI/DCF background check
  • MAP experience/Med Delegation a plus. Will train strong candidates in MAP

Job Type: 40 hours/week
