Summary

The Rackham Partnerships for Access, Community, and Excellence (PACE) Office is seeking three (3) residential life leaders to serve as active and visible staff members responsible for supporting the residential life component of our prospective student programs (see below for a description of the three programs). This includes pre-arrival administration, supporting students’ safety and well-being, facilitating community-building, acting as liaison with conferences and event services staff, documentation of best practices, and program evaluation. These positions will be supervised by the Rackham Academic Program Manager for Outreach and Summer Programs.

This position requires the selected candidates to live in the residence halls from May 24 through August 5, 2023.

Stipend: $6,000 plus room & board. Stipend is paid in two installments of $3,000 each at the end of June and July.

There is an hourly temporary Program Assistant position associated with this posting, which will include pre-program work from May 1, 2023 and post-program work from August 6 - August 31, 2023. Applicants must be available for both the temporary Program Assistant position and the Residential Life Leader position in order to be considered.

The Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) at the University of Michigan is designed for outstanding undergraduate students who are underrepresented in their field of study. The Michigan Humanities Emerging Research Scholars (MICHHERS) program is designed to encourage rising seniors, recent B.A.s, and terminal Master's students from diverse cultural, economic, geographic, and ethnic backgrounds to consider pursuing a doctoral degree in humanities at the University of Michigan. The summer research experience will run from May 30 - June 10, 2023. The Rackham Aspiring Fellows (RAF) is a yearlong fellowship program at the University of Michigan designed to support a cohort of undergraduate students from Minority-Serving Institutions (MSI) to prepare for doctoral study. Fellows will work collaboratively on a research project with faculty from both U-M and their home institution, while also engaging in professional and academic development activities. The on-campus summer component of the program will take place from July 12 to July 21, 2023.

Responsibilities*

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Ongoing

  • Meet weekly with supervisor, with the expectation that there will be more frequent contact as needed

  • Meet weekly with SROP, MICHHERS, and RAF teams to discuss issues of concern and work together to develop solutions

Safety and well-being of program participants

  • Work closely with the Summer Conference staff, Resident Hall Staff, and the Department of Public Safety to create a safe and secure community

  • Communicate with the Program Director, Hall Director on Duty, Housing Security, and others as needed to ensure impacted students are supported holistically

  • Obtain and organize necessary student forms such as emergency information for each participant

  • Monitor crisis management plan, including emergency procedures

  • Be the first responder to critical incidents including facilities issues, participant conflicts, and mental health concerns

  • Report all incidents immediately to the program manager

Community and Student Development

  • Coordinate all check-in procedures and host welcome programming

  • Conduct nightly office hours

  • Facilitate community programming efforts during the evenings and weekends

  • Based on student’s needs, co-coordinate ongoing leadership training with a focus on diversity and inclusion, communication, and conflict resolution skills

  • Model a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by creating and fostering a community in which all individuals are respected while continuing to educate both residents and staff members on issues of identity.

  • Coordinate all check-out procedures


Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience;

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;

  • Direct experience working and interacting with college students;

  • Experience with conflict resolution and negotiation;

  • Ability to work as part of a team and capacity to exercise independent initiative;

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to maintain confidentiality in matters of a sensitive and confidential nature;

  • Ability to handle multiple projects with excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines;

  • Knowledge of personal computer productivity tools including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and electronic communication, social media, and calendaring software packages; and

  • Experience delivering programming in virtual formats, including familiarity with Canvas, Zoom, and other virtual platforms;

Desired Qualifications*

  • Familiarity with diversity issues in higher education and specifically the challenges faced by underrepresented populations is highly desired;

  • Reasonable knowledge of University housing policies and procedures, University organization, and University protocol and governance;

  • Research and scholarly interest in student affairs/development.
