Position Summary:
Do you have a passion for research, monitoring, education, and community engagement for coastal resources and an interest in promoting conservation stewardship? We are recruiting for the Manager position of the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (KBNERR) in Homer, Alaska. This position will lead the Research Reserve, manage staff, facilities, budgets, and projects, and serves as PI on several extramurally funded projects related to marine ecology, coastal and estuary ecology, natural resource management, and education in Alaska – and in beautiful Kachemak Bay. This position requires excellent communication skills, fostering relationships with numerous partners, federal and state agencies, and local governments, writing proposals and securing extramural funding, conducting research or leading research and outreach efforts, and contributing to national-level activities among the National Estuarine Research Reserve network. KBNERR is part of the Alaska Center for Conservation Science (ACCS), which is a center for research, education, and scholarship at UAA that is committed to providing the public, industry, and agency partners with information to facilitate effective biological conservation and management of the state's natural resources. Our faculty and staff conduct basic and applied research, serve a wide range of data to the public, offer professional services, and provide educational opportunities.Duties:
- Must have expert-level knowledge of research methods and analytical procedures to design research projects, develop proposals for extramural funding, and implement research projects.
- Must apply knowledge of budgeting guidelines to develop and track project budgets.
- Must have good supervisory skills in managing research, education, and outreach staff.
- Must have strong communication skills.
- Must have prior publications in refereed research or natural resource management journals that communicate findings to the public, agencies, and other scientists.
- Must be able to design and implement sampling procedures, define research goals, and answer policy questions related to marine/coastal ecology, habitat, and biological research.
- Must be able to conduct fieldwork or educational trainings in wilderness settings (including managing field logistics); have wilderness survival and travel skills; have database management skills; have working knowledge of Alaska's geography, landscape, biota, and ecosystems.
- Analyzes and resolves significant problems.
- Problem resolution requires considerable analysis of multiple components or conflicting issues.
- Applies broad understanding of program, organization, system and/or client needs to resolve highly complex problems.
- Identifies new services and opportunities for process improvement.
- Independently evaluates and meets complex organizational, program or system needs in assigned area.
- Specialist or expert resource.
- Serves as a strategic adviser.
- Is a team or project leader.
- Develops long-range strategic plans.
- Plans and directs activities/functions for multiple operations, programs or projects.
- Authorized to commit the program or organization to projects/expenditures within well-defined guidelines.
- Interprets and applies complex rules and regulations associated with external funding and institutional policies.
Ph.D. and four years of research and program management experience or M.S. and 8 years of management/ research experience or in a field relevant to the ecology or natural resource management of Alaska's marine/coastal ecosystems, relevant socio-economic systems, or education.
This is a full-time, 12-month, term-funded, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 82, based on education and experience.
