Job Description
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: Under the supervision of
Jess Gersony
, serve as the research technician in the
PLACE (PLant physiology, Art and Community Engagement) Lab
at Smith College on the USDA NIFA-funded project entitled “Understanding drought sensitivity in eastern U.S. forests to inform sustainable forest management practices”. Assist with and conduct physiological research investigating the drought responses of northeastern trees. Engage and collaborate with various partners (e.g. forest managers, community members, other researchers and universities) in the project using a translational ecology approach.
Applications will begin being reviewed on March 12, 2023 and continue until the position is filled.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborate with various community partners in project development and findings dissemination
  • Operate physiological equipment (e.g. Scholander pressure chambers, Vapro osmometers, Li-Cor instruments, sap-flux instruments)
  • Collect and analyze data
  • Write peer-reviewed scientific journal article(s) and make scientific poster(s) summarizing findings
  • Mentor undergraduates in the lab
  • Create communication/art pieces related to the project
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: BA/BS in related field; community engagement experience and/or experience with DEI initiatives; driver’s license preferred but not required.
SKILLS: Lab and/or field research experience in related field; Strong organizational and writing skills; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively
This is a one-year, limited term position with the possibility for extension.
