Overview:
Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) is seeking a Research Project Coordinator. In collaboration with other members of the health care team, facilitates the implementation and follow through for clinical research studies to enhance the advancement of medical knowledge and practice. Manages the collection and data input of study data relative to the Augmenting the On-Scene Medic (ATOM) grant; coordinates and schedules study participant involvement; collects data and maintains records of data; analyzes and inputs study data; is responsible for the development of record-keeping systems and daily summary of project status; contributes to reporting and study documentation for presentations and publishing of findings.

Responsibilities:
  • Collects, records, and analyzes research data. Develops systems that facilitate efficient and effective research processes.
  • Facilitates all aspects of research study to enhance the advancement of medical knowledge and practice and further the advancement of evidence based practice.
  • Identifies, recruits, and screens participants for research study according to protocol.
  • Assists with Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications, continuing renewals, record keeping, and reporting.
  • Coordinates study across multiple sites and Emergency Medical Services agencies. Sends out monthly progress reports to EMS Agencies, communicates with EMS Agencies regarding paramedic and agency participation in simulations, communicates with statistician and study scientist(s) to request and coordinate study data output.
  • Obtains informed consent for participation in clinical research studies (as needed).
  • Collects, reviews, and documents study data to assure compliance of documentation required for the study file and applicable state and federal laws as well as Institutional Review Board requirements, utilizing the appropriate case report forms and other documents according to study protocols.
  • Enters study data into a secure database in accordance with study protocol timelines.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains systems to assure accuracy of study/patient information and compliance of documentation in adherence to federal, state, Research Base/Study Sponsor, WMed and IRB policies in research studies to prevent penalty, including but not limited to fines and/or institutional suspension or closure due to noncompliance.
  • Performs/facilitates completion of assessments according to the protocol.
  • Performs, assists with and facilitates EMS human patient simulation sessions at multiple locations.
  • Analyzes and evaluates scientific research study protocols for efficiency, ethical nature, and applicability to WMed, affiliated programs, and the community.
  • Performs scientific literature searches as requested by investigator(s).
  • Assesses EMS agency/paramedic and study staff educational needs related to clinical research and implements plans, procedures, and program content designed to meet specific educational needs.
  • Serves as a resource and a consultant to research study centers, investigator(s), physicians, physician offices, and other members of the health care team within and outside of WMed.
  • Maintains inventories and documents for study-specific tools.
  • Develops and presents study specific research statistics and analysis at internal and external meetings.
  • Performs such individual assignments as management may direct. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships within the organization.
  • Ensures that patients, their families, visitors, customers, and employees are treated with kindness and respect. Demonstrates teamwork and integrity in all work-related activities.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in research and area of specialty by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences, seminars and other related activities. Demonstrates knowledge of EMS safety and infection control policies and procedures, maintaining a safe and clean environment.
  • Availability to work on weekends and evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of Bachelors of Science in Healthcare, Healthcare Administration, Business, or equivalent field.
  • Two or more years research, clinical/medical experience, preferably in an out-of-hospital environment.
  • Michigan-licensed paramedic/Nationally Registered Paramedic, Instructor-Coordinator licensure preferred.
  • Ability to effectively use word processing and patient record-keeping software.
  • Familiarity with social media use (Facebook, Twitter), google forms.
  • Familiarity with project management software.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Current Michigan licensure as a paramedic or registered nurse with familiarity with field EMS operations preferred.
  • Instructor-Coordinator licensure preferred.
  • Current unrestricted Michigan driver’s license, requires ability to manage a vehicle-towed trailer.
  • The employee be required to complete and maintain Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) certifications for human subjects research and any other human subjects research as required by Institutional Review Board or governing agencies.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Experience/ability to work with high fidelity pediatric patient simulators.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Must have time management and organizational skills, be self-directed and have the ability to make quality independent decisions.
  • Analytical and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes and multiple interruptions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of workflow.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
