Job Overview

This position relates to project management and implementation of several awarded grants pertaining to health equity, translational genomics, and cancer disparities research. Overall, all research projects are related to addressing cancer prevention and control in socio-economically disadvantaged populations, racial/ethnic subgroups, and other groups that bear disproportionate cancer burden in the US. Exemplar activities include the completion of general research related tasks such preparation of IRB documents, consenting and interviewing participants, developing intervention materials, data collection surveys and interviews, qualitative and quantitative data coding and analysis, coordinating study sites, writing reports, assisting with grant writing, assisting with manuscripts writing.

Work Interactions

This position supports the breast cancer research activities of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center - Cancer Prevention and Control Program. The Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) seeks to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer through innovative basic and clinical research, patient care, community education and outreach, and the training of cancer specialists for the future. Founded in 1970, LCCC is one of only 41 institutions in the nation designated by the NCI as a comprehensive cancer center, and it is the only comprehensive cancer center in the Washington, DC area. Cancer Prevention and Control Program (CPC). The goal of the program is to conduct research designed to better understand the determinants of cancer behaviors and outcomes and to reduce the burden of cancer in individuals, populations, and society. Specifically, CPC research seeks to develop, evaluate, and disseminate innovative cancer control interventions designed to reduce cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality among high-risk populations. Since its inception in 1993, the former Cancer Control Program (now CPC) has received excellent to outstanding ratings in Cancer Center Support Grant reviews. Our faculty represents diverse backgrounds and interests, and includes: behavioral scientists, health services researchers, epidemiologists, community researchers, psychologists, decision analysts, health economists, ethicists, and statisticians.

The Project Coordinator will work on several projects that aim to reduce cancer disparities in underserved populations. The projects include a five-year multi-site grant to test a culturally targeted video in a randomized controlled trial; an assessment of the impact of Covid-19 in Black and Latina breast cancer survivors; a study to test the efficacy of acupressure to reduce symptoms in Black and Latina breast cancer survivors, and a study to train community health workers to identify and refer Latinas at-risk of hereditary cancer to genetic services. These grants advance not only important institutional mission to promote health equity but also National Moonshot Goals and Global Sustainable development goals.

The Project Coordinator will directly report to Alejandra Hurtado de Mendoza (Assistant Professor) and Kristi Graves (Associate Professor). Moreover, the Project Coordinator will closely interact with community organizations and maintain a good relationship between community partners and the department.

Requirements and Qualifications

Candidates will need to have a BA or BS in Psychology or closely related fields (Public Health, Anthropology)

Excellent oral and written communication skills are required

Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills

Cultural competence. Previous interactions/communications with individuals from diverse backgrounds

Experience working both independently and collaboratively in a team

Fluency in Spanish and English

Experience in Academic writing

Preferred requirements: Prior research experience; previous experience working at hospital settings, experience with IRB protocols, experience conducting interviews and surveys, experience with data collection and participant management tools (e.g., REDCap) and statistical analysis and programs (e.g., SPSS, SAS); The ideal candidate will have a MS, or interest in continuing their career or pursuing a Master Program in a related area.
