One position is available in the chambers of Judge Stephen Hill in Topeka, Kansas with potential for part-time remote.

Job Duties: The Research Attorney I must perform all activities in a respectful, organized and highly confidential manner. The Research Attorney I is required to read and review briefs and other records submitted on appeal and conduct legal research on a broad range of civil and criminal legal issues. The successful candidate must draft complete, quality prehearing bench memoranda on assigned cases, proofread the judge's orders and opinions, verify citations, assist during courtroom proceedings and perform other duties as assigned. Research attorneys also are expected to work cooperatively with chambers staff and court personnel.

The successful applicant must have the ability to read and analyze complex legal issues; have exceptional legal research skills including electronic research; create accurate legal citations; maintain effective and confidential relationships with all court personnel; and work independently and effectively under deadline.

Employment Dates: The dates of employment are flexible depending on the KS Bar Admission status of the applicant. Approximately January 19, 2023 through January 19, 2025.

Required Education and Experience: Preference may be given to candidates who are currently licensed to practice law in Kansas OR who have a Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) result transferrable to Kansas per Supreme Court Rule 709A.

Applicants who have yet to take the Kansas Bar may apply and, before employment may begin, must (1) apply to take the Kansas bar exam or apply to transfer their UBE score to Kansas, (2) submit proof they successfully completed the MPRE and the character and fitness investigation in Kansas, and (3) obtain a Kansas temporary permit to practice law.

Preference will be given to an applicant with a law school GPA in the top one-third of the applicant's graduating class.
