Position Focus:
Under the general direction and supervision of the Research Associate III of the Yale Center for Genome Analysis (YCGA), this individual will supervise the library prep and sequence production sections. They will lead library prep R&D efforts in protocol development and robotic implementation for the Precision Medicine Initiative as well as all equipment and LIMS implementations. Establish and maintain automation protocols for library preparation, quantification and pooling and test protocols for quality and yield. Integrate liquid handling systems with LIMS system. Interact with the Research Associate III and the Director of YCGA on a daily basis to coordinate and maintain sequencer and library prep schedules and staff project assignments. Serve as a subject matter expert on all library prep equipment implementations. Establish Standard Operating Procedures and develop general policies regarding RNA-seq library prep and user prepared library QC. Directly assist the Research Associate III in supervision of the staff and function, as needed, as the supervisor for sequencing and library preparation. Represent Research Associate III, as needed, with the Administrative Supervisor of the facility on all administrative issues including but not limited to staffing, temporary/casual usage, resolution of workflow and staff issues, performance management, scheduling, work rules, University policy and bargaining unit interpretation, etc. Carry out library and flow cell prep production, maintain equipment, and perform other duties as required. Troubleshoot and resolve library prep and sequencing instrument related issues with technical support. Interpret and generate reports summarizing library prep and sequencing results. Communicate with investigators and collaborators. Provide technical assistance to the users. Interact with various YCGA operation teams. Provide orientation and training to new lab personnel including instruction in laboratory protocols and providing information and practical assistance as required. Help oversee and maintain the day-to-day operations of the lab. Maintain and update information on the YCGA website. Perform literature searches to determine current trends in sequencing operation and remain pro-active in adapting appropriate protocols. Assist with gathering information for grants and proposals and provide support with editing.
Essential Duties
1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority. 2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. 4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory. 7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master's Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team; Ability to help build and lead a team and to interact well while providing instruction and guidance to a diverse group of personnel. Demonstrates a high level of motivation.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Demonstrated ability in basic molecular biology techniques such as PCR, DNA/RNA extraction and gel electrophoresis.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Advanced level with basic computer programs such as Word and Excel.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Excellent oral and written communications skills. Strong interpersonal, organizational and customer service skills with the ability to multi-task.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Ability to be proactive with strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Experience in various areas of sequencing workflow such as operation of Illumina NovaSeq instruments and RNA-seq library preparation for Illumina sequencing. Experience in a core lab setting with demonstrated customer service skills. Previous experience with NGS automation instrumentation such as the Janus, Hamilton, or SciClone is a plus.
