The Frederick Gunn School, founded in 1850, is a co-ed boarding and day school for students in grades 9-12 as well as a post-graduate year. Mr. Gunn had a deep appreciation for the natural world, believing that in nature students understand themselves as humans and their place in the world. He took a principled stand against slavery and spurred students (and the town at large) to examine their beliefs. In addition to the habits and skills students will need in college and life beyond, we teach them to follow Mr. Gunn’s example: to cultivate wisdom, to be trailblazers, to act with conviction, and to value character as highly as intellect and achievement.

Requirements:
  • Current nursing license from the State of Connecticut.
  • Experience with Adolescent Health/School Health preferred.
  • Must have the ability to work independently with excellent physical assessment skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Customer service mindset with good communication with parents from all over the world.
  • Experience with Magnus and Google Suite is helpful but not necessary.

Job Description:
  • Assessing and treating students for injuries/illness.
  • Performs nursing duties for all students ensuring compliance with physicians' orders.
  • Testing and caring for students with communicable diseases such as COVID-19, flu, and other illnesses.
  • Establishes health care policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with providers' orders.
  • Assist with day-to-day efficiency of the operations of the Health Center.
  • Follow through on treatment plans ordered by the provider.
  • Monitor and report change in patient symptoms or behavior and document them appropriately.
  • Document appropriate assessment of students presenting to the health center following standing.
  • Administration of daily controlled and non-controlled medication that is dispensed in the health center.
  • Maintain timely communication with appropriate departments/faculty/coaches regarding students being cared for in Health Center.
  • Most calls are triaged by phone, but on-call nurses may be required to report to the Health Center or on campus to assess a student.

Schedule:
  • Full-time with a minimum of 32 hours a week, hourly exempt position, benefits-eligible.
  • Health Center is open from 7:30 am - 10 pm Monday-Friday with flexible 8-hour shifts, 8 am - 12 pm on Saturday & 9 am - 1 pm on Sunday.
  • Rotating weekends are required.
  • On-call night rotation shift required.
  • The ten-month position follows the academic year (2 weeks in December/January, 2 weeks in March, and summer months) Full school schedule is available online.
