  • ü Cooperates with other departments to ensure that services can be adequately maintained to meet the physical and emotional needs of the resident.

  • ü Periodically review the department’s policies, procedure manuals, job description, ect. Make recommendations for revisions.
  • ü Ensure that the nursing service personnel comply with the procedures set forth in the Nursing Service Procedure Manual.
  • ü Ensure that all nursing service personnel are in compliance with their respective job descriptions.
  • ü Participate in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the facility’s quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
  • ü Complete accident/incident reports as necessary per policies and procedures.
  • ü Receive telephone orders from physicians and record them in the EMR.
  • ü Transcribe physician’s orders to resident charts, kardex, treatment/care plans as required.
  • ü Chart nurses’ notes in an informative and descriptive professional manner that reflects the care provided to the resident as well as the resident’s response to care.
  • ü Report all discrepancies noted concerning physician’s orders, diet change, charting error, ect to the RN Nurse Manager and Director of Nursing.
  • ü Ensure that narcotic records are accurate for your shift.
  • ü Notify the Director of Nursing of all drug and narcotic discrepancies noted in your shift.
  • ü Dispose of drugs and narcotics as required and in accordance with established procedures.
  • ü Participate in employee performance evaluations, determining your shift’s staffing requirements, and making recommendations to the Director of Nursing concerning employee dismissals, transfers, ect.
  • ü Inform the scheduler of staffing needs when assigned personnel fail to report to work.
  • ü Report absentee call-ins to the scheduler.
  • ü Review and evaluate your department’s work force and make recommendations to the Director of Nursing.
  • ü Provide leadership to nursing personnel assigned to your unit/shift.
  • ü Make daily rounds of your unit/shift to ensure that nursing service personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards. Report problem areas to the Director of Nursing.
  • ü Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to ensure that nursing services and activities can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the residents.
  • ü Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit and shift.
  • ü Turn in complaints and grievances to Social Services Director.
  • ü Ensure that disciplinary action is administered fairly and without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, age, sex, religion, handicap, or marital status.
  • ü Receive/give the nursing report upon reporting in and ending shift duty hours.
  • ü Ensure that rooms are ready for new admissions.
  • ü Greet newly admitted residents upon admission. Escort them to their room as necessary.
  • ü Participate in the orientation of new residents, family members to the facility.
  • ü Requisition and arrange for diagnostic and therapeutic services, as ordered by the physician and in accordance with our established procedures.
  • ü Consult with the resident’s physician in providing the resident’s care, treatment, rehabilitation, etc., as necessary.
  • ü Review the resident’s chart for specific treatments, medication orders, diet, ect., as necessary.
  • ü Implement and maintain established nursing objectives and standards.
  • ü Notify the resident’s attending physician and next-of-kin when there is a change in the resident’s conditions/death.
  • ü Inspect the nursing service treatment areas daily to ensure that they are maintained in a clean and safe manner.
  • ü Administer professional services such as; catheterization, tube feedings, mouth suctioning, applying and changing dressing/bandages, packs, colostomy, and drainage bags, glucometers, giving massages and range of motion exercises, care for the death/dying, ect.
  • ü Obtain sputum, urine and other specimens for lab tests as ordered.
  • ü Take and records TPRs, blood pressures, ect., as necessary.
  • ü Monitor seriously ill residents as necessary.
  • ü Ensure that personnel providing direct care to residents are providing such care in accordance with the resident’s care plan and wishes.
  • ü Call funeral homes when requested by family. Ensure that established post-mortem procedures are followed.
  • ü Implement and maintain an effective orientation program that orients the new employee to your shift, its policies and procedures, and to his/her job position and duties.
  • ü Attending mandatory meetings and complete required educations per facility policy yearly.
  • ü Ensure that established departmental policies and procedures, including dress code and cell phone policy and followed by your assigned nursing personnel.
  • ü Ensure that your assigned work areas (i.e., nurse’s stations ect.) are maintained in a clean and sanitary manner (no food or beverages).
  • ü Ensure that your unit’s resident rooms are maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary manner.
  • ü Ensure that your assigned personnel follow established hand-washing techniques in the administering of nursing care procedures.
  • ü Ensure that your assigned personnel follow established infection control procedures when isolation precautions become necessary.
  • ü Ensure that nursing personnel follow established procedures in the use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
  • ü Report any hazardous conditions of equipment.
  • ü Ensure that an adequate stock level of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc., is maintained on your unit/shift at all times to meet the needs of the residents.
  • ü Ensure that all personnel operate nursing service equipment in a safe manner.
  • ü Review care plans daily to ensure that appropriate care is being rendered.
  • ü Inform the RN Nurse Managers of any changes that need to be made on the care plan.
  • ü Ensure that your nurses’ note reflects that the care plan is being followed when administering nursing care or treatment.
  • ü Review resident care plans for appropriate resident goals, problems, approaches, and revisions based on nursing needs.
  • ü Ensure that your assigned certified nursing assistants (CNA’s) are aware of the resident care plans. Ensure that the CNA’s refer to the resident’s care plan prior to administering daily care to the resident and updating them with any changes.
  • ü Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information.
  • ü Monitor nursing care to ensure that all residents are treated fairly, and with kindness, dignity and respect.
  • ü Ensure that all nursing care is provided in privacy and that nursing service personnel knock before entering the resident’s room.
  • ü Report and investigate all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property.
  • ü Provide date to the Quality Assurance and Assessment committee as requested.
  • ü Administers all medications/treatments as ordered accurately and safely.
  • ü Ensures that all medications are properly labeled.
  • ü Completes medication error form as required. Update the family and the physician per policy.
  • ü Follows facility policy and procedure regarding the destruction of medications.
  • ü Uses pain rating tools to determine intervention and response.
  • ü Follows the facility procedure for allowing residents to self-administer their medications as directed by the RN Nurse Manager.
  • ü Follows established guidelines for proper storage of medications.
  • ü Strategically times medications/treatments to coincide with the resident’s individual routine.
  • ü Ensure that eye drops, lotions, creams, etc., have an expiration label on it after it has been opened.
  • ü Ensure that when a resident is transferring, discharging or leaving for an appointment that they are ready by the door with proper clothing on.
  • Secondary Accountabilities:
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing.
  • Physical Requirements: (With or without the aid of mechanical devices)
  • This position has the potential for exposure to body fluids and chemicals. Physical demands of the job include bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and reaching overhead. Individuals in this position must be able to bend, kneel, crouch and reach while performing patient cares. Individuals need to be familiar with the various types of mechanical equipment used in the nursing department. Staff will be trained in the specific equipment used to perform their job during floor orientation.
