Special Information:

The position is a full-time permanent position within the Parks and Outdoor Recreation Division of Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks (FWP). At this time, the position will have responsibility for Giant Springs and Ackley Lake State Parks, Widow Coulee, Carter Ferry and Loma Bridge Fishing Access Sites and the Judith River Wildlife Management Area. The position will be based at Giant Springs State Park. This position requires planning for and working at various recreation sites. The recreation manager may work and travel in some instances in poor weather and travel conditions. The position will require a willingness to work periodically during irregular hours, weekends, and holidays particularly during peak recreational periods, typically from May through October.

Giant Springs is the most visited state park in Montana. The Park is located near Great Falls, MT and Region 4 FWP Headquarters and includes acreage along the Missouri River and land owned by NorthWestern Energy that is managed by FWP. It has significant cultural, historic, and recreational significance. Ackley Lake, located near Hobson, MT is a popular State Park offering camping, fishing, boating, swimming, and birdwatching. Ackley Lake State Park has a friend’s group that assists FWP in various capacities. The position will require the Recreation Manger to work closely with the friend’s group.

Located on the Missouri River in the heart of Montana, Great Falls is a haven of rich arts, culture, and history and is centrally located to provide ample outdoor opportunities, entertainment, health care, and shopping. Home to nearly 60,000 residents, Great Falls is the third largest city in Montana. Nearly every outdoor activity available in Montana is accessible in or around Great Falls, including hiking, road and mountain biking, hunting, fishing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and wildlife viewing areas. The city offers an extensive hiking and biking trail system along the river, three golf courses, two disc golf courses, a minor-league baseball stadium, multiple city parks, two state parks, and one national wildlife refuge.

Job Duties:
The Recreation Manager is assigned to a geographic unit and manages and coordinates all aspects of non-maintenance operations at State Parks, Fishing Access Sites, Wildlife Management Areas (recreation management only), and/or river corridors assigned to that unit. This work primarily encompasses broad administrative, operational, recreation, visitor use, natural, cultural, and historical resource management activities. Except for maintenance functions, this position oversees daily site and program operations, employees, visitor use and behavior, and facilities at assigned sites. The Recreation Manager may also be tasked with conducting public use rule compliance duties within the scope of their training. Where applicable, this position provides essential services and tasks as they arise, including but not limited to addressing public safety concerns, fee collection and remittance, interpretation and education, visitor use data collection, and special recreation permit and commercial use permit compliance. The position is supervised by the Regional Recreation Manager and provides direction to staff and volunteers. In the absence of the Regional Recreation Manager, a Recreation Manager may be assigned acting duties. A Recreation Manager may be assigned to multiple geographic units or be called upon to assist with, collaborate on, or share management of another geographic unit as circumstances require.

Minimum Qualifications:

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through a Bachelor’s Degree in Park Management, Resource Conservation, Outdoor Recreation, or a related field and at least 2 years of job-related experience. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
