R&D Senior Applied Engineer

Your role in this position will be to initiate and drive technology and/or product development using in depth technical expertise in a specific area or a broad range of skills in a technical field. As part of the research and development (R&D) team in San Jose, California, you will utilize state of the art hardware and software to conduct experimental research, drive product innovations, and contribute to the emerging field of Advanced Leak Detection. A successful candidate will demonstrate a deep understanding of applied science and field methods, take ownership of tasks, and have a proven track record of creating and implementing innovative approaches to complex problems.

Your responsibilities

• Lead a team focused on leak detection methods, including colleagues, external collaborators, student interns
• Develop novel solutions to improve the performance and expand the application space of ABB instruments
• Utilize hardware, software, and data analysis skills to develop and test novel methods of finding and quantifying industrial and environmental gas emissions
• Individually and collaboratively with a team, design and perform experiments needed to qualify applications of new and current products
• Work with academic, national laboratory, industrial, and other research collaborators to apply laser-based analyzers to a wide array of environmental, industrial, medical, and military applications
• Synthesize and communicate findings
• Perform and design experiments in the laboratory and outside
• Some travel may be required
• A valid US driver’s license

Your background

• Ph.D. in an applied/experimental field such as Physics, Aeronautics, Engineering, Geosciences, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Ecology, Biological Sciences, or related field
• 5 years of experience leading a research project or team, or as Principal Investigator
• Ability to motivate and challenge teammates in collaborative environment
• General working knowledge of fundamental physics (e.g., classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, electromagnetic radiation, kinematics) and applied mathematics.
• Hands-on experience performing experiments, collecting data, and working on projects in a field and/or laboratory setting
• Proven problem-solving skills to identify and troubleshoot unforeseen problems in a systematic, scientific method without direct instruction
• Excellent understanding of statistical methods and experimental data analysis
• Ability to develop, implement and launch initiatives related to product changes, new products, and new applications
• Familiarity with scientific data analysis tools such as: MATLAB, Pro, Origin, LabVIEW, Python, etc
• Experience with motion, such as cars, drones, aircraft, etc
• Experience with mesoscale simulation of physical systems (wind, fluids, heat, etc.)
• Analysis of experimental data using multivariate statistics, nonlinear minimization, and numerical solving
• Scientific coding and data analysis experience in Matlab & Python including, but not limited to, Pandas, Numpy, Matplotlib, Scipy libraries. Familiarity with Linux
• Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken)
• Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
