Position Location: Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA

We are currently recruiting for a Research and Development Scientist – Oilfield and Industrial Solutions. This position is in the Oilfield and Industrial Solutions team and reports to the manager of that group. The position is located at our Lake Charles Chemical Complex within the Research and Development Department.

Purpose of Job

We are looking for an innovative and independent scientist that can systematically gather and use scientific knowledge and empirical evidence to design and test new products / customer solutions for end use applications in key markets. Success will require collaboration with lead scientists and chemists within the research group, as well as the ability to build relationships with business partners and customers.

Key Accountabilities

• Initiates, develops and executes technical projects which are aligned with the needs of the application area
• Demonstrate feasibility of technical solutions to key problems/issues within research group and project teams
• Responsible for safely setting up and conducting laboratory experiments independently, for properly maintaining equipment, and for the generation and communication of reliable, properly-documented data
• Critically evaluates, documents and presents experimental or analytical results
• Reponsible for understanding Sasol’s procedures for securing intellectual property
• Responsible for writing of technical abstracts and papers for publication in scientific journals
• Ensures efforts are aligned with global research group and project teams
• Competent regarding key instrumentation and standard techniques commonly used in the laboratory

Formal Education

• Bachelor’s degree - required
• Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Petroleum Engineering - preferred
• Advanced degrees (entry-level position for PhD candidates) - preferred

Working Experience

• Non-chemistry degree with minimum 12 years relevant experience
• Bachelor’s degree with minimum 6 years relevant experience
• Master’s degree with minimum 2 years relevant experience
• Ph.D. degree – entry level job for graduates

Required Personal & Professional Skills

• A positive attitude and a collaborative mindset
• Ability to define and implement ideas and solutions to address customer requests
• Ability to work on fast-paced projects as well as on long term projects
• Excellent verbal and technical writing skills
• The ideal candidate should demonstrate proficiency in the design of various formulations commonly used in 2 or more of the fields below. Experience in 2 or more of the core areas below:
  • General surfactant applications
  • Wettability changers/Cleaning formulations
  • Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques
  • Drilling fluids formulations (OBM, WBM)
  • Emulsifiers/Demulsifiers
  • Cementing/Construction
  • Pulp & Paper or Water Treatment
  • Mining
