Quality Lead Resident Engineer based in Charleston, SC

Role Summary

The Quality Lead Resident Engineer (RE) leads the Quality Resident Engineer and coordinates all relevant rework and sorting activities at the Customer Facility. This position will require the candidate to be located near the Volvo plant, just outside Charleston, SC. Responsibility includes ensuring information according to defects and customer complaints are feedback back to Drive Automotive and coordinate Clean Points with the customer. The Lead Resident Engineer is the direct interface to the customer's SQA group.

The Quality Lead Resident Engineer (RE) is responsible to ensure that the Customer, People, and Investor goals are balanced and met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review Drive’s Internal Issues (Quality Alerts) and previous shift pass-down.
  • Attend meetings and ensure issues are communicated.
  • Investigate customer concerns and determine if the issue is Internal or Drive related.
  • Provide feedback of potential concerns at customer.
  • Perform containment of non-conforming product found at the customer.
  • Sort and certify product to ensure production is not interrupted.
  • Perform metal reworking such as filing and buffing, as needed.
  • Perform rework of non-conforming product to customer’s requirements, as needed.
  • Issue Quality Alerts when non-conforming product is found at the customer.
  • Provide direction for Drive Associates, Quality Resident Engineers and Third Party who support with containments, sorts, rework and tracking activities.
  • Review Third Party Work Instruction for accuracy and approve.
  • Audit Third Party process to ensure adherence to Drive and Customer expectation.
  • Provide Daily package which includes information about defect, JD, amount of parts sorted, reworked, label information, pictures and amount scraped.
  • Coordination of potential trial runs and engineering changes in conjunction with the SQA department.
  • Schedule and control Quality Resident Engineer overtime.
  • Escalation to management if desired results are not progressing to customer expectations.
  • Negotiation of relevant customer chargeback’s, reject’s and PPM`s.
  • Ensure Quality Resident Engineers training requirements are met, including customer on-site requirements and Drive procedures / Standards.
  • Ensure Performance Appraisals are complete to schedule.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Key Qualifications/Requirements

Communication Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret all data reports, financial documents, customer technical reports for data tracking.
  • Ability to create technical documents to convey issues, status, and corrective action.
  • Ability to effectively present all material relating to job description for management support &/or decision-making process.


Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to define problems through solid root cause analysis with data / information collection, establish factual information and determine a path to resolution.

  • Standing 80%
  • Sitting 20%


Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor Degree in a technical related discipline or 5 years related automotive experience with sound understanding of BIW build fit & function.
  • Must have an understanding in the following areas, die / die process, assembly tooling, welding & sealer applications, data processing & reporting, metal finishing to customer specifications, customer tolerancing concepts.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Word.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Strong leadership skills.
